{"id":16927,"date":"2018-10-01T04:25:29","date_gmt":"2018-10-01T04:25:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=16927"},"modified":"2018-10-01T04:25:29","modified_gmt":"2018-10-01T04:25:29","slug":"how-afghanistan-fell-in-love-with-cricket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=16927","title":{"rendered":"How Afghanistan fell in love with cricket"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"219.581459703\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/afghanistan.html\">Afghanistan<\/a>\u00a0recently ended its 2018 Asia Cup journey in Dubai with a series of impressive performances, filling Afghans at home with joy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span><span>With victories against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, a<\/span>\u00a0tie against India and a competitive effort against Pakistan, the team returned home winners, despite not making it to the final.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Pakhtoon Sarfaraz, a 22-year-old student of agriculture at the Said Jamal Uddin-e-Afghani University in\u00a0Asadabad, the provincial capital of the eastern Kunar province, is among those who have been left feeling inspired.<\/p>\n<p>A local cricket player, he believes the national team has made significant progress over the past few years and has\u00a0his\u00a0sights set on one day representing Afghanistan\u00a0internationally.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;In the years to come, we will bring the World Cup home, I truly believe that. I picked up everything so quickly,&#8221; he told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My coach at the time was very happy with me,&#8221; he said, referring to\u00a0<span>Raees Ahmadzai, a well-known\u00a0former Afghan cricketer who represented the national team until his retirement in 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over the years, I just developed a lot of passion to represent my country on an international level in cricket.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sarfaraz has played in provincial cricket tournaments alongside national players including\u00a0Usman Ghani, Farid Malak, Shabir Noori and Batin Shah.<\/p>\n<p>He has also represented seven provincial cricket teams since 2008 and captained squads in district and inter-college contests.<\/p>\n<p>He now plays for about four hours a day after university lectures at the Kunar Cricket Academy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By the end of the day, I am very tired. I barely socialise outside of university and academy. I have a goal in my mind and I want to achieve it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It is an amazing feeling to play cricket. I can only express my love for cricket by practicing to be the best.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>How cricket evolved in Afghanistan<\/h2>\n<p>Cricket is relatively new in Afghanistan and particularly popular in the east of the country, along the border with Pakistan, a country which enjoys the game with\u00a0unparalleled passion.<\/p>\n<p>The sport was imported by Afghan refugees who had lived in Pakistan in the 1990s, after they fled the Soviet invasion.<\/p>\n<p>Upon returning, they brought cricket home with them.<\/p>\n<p>But sports including cricket and football were banned and condemned by the Taliban during their rule, which began in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>The Taliban lifted the cricket ban in 2000, making it the only sport approved by the group.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/9\/28\/4bc5c9059c2f432fa787a240ed07b87b_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"2\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/9\/28\/4bc5c9059c2f432fa787a240ed07b87b_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"4\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Sarfaraz, right, started playing cricket at the age of 11 [Courtesy: Pakhtoon Sarfaraz]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In 2001, when\u00a0a US-led invasion toppled the Taliban,\u00a0the national team was formed and in the same year, the International Cricket Council (ICC), which is the global governing body of cricket, granted &#8220;affiliate&#8221; status to the Afghanistan Cricket Board, formerly known as the Afghanistan Cricket\u00a0Federation.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the ICC awarded Afghanistan with a full &#8220;test&#8221; status.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the main reasons that our national team started doing so well is because the Afghan government started investing in them and in the cricket academies across the country,&#8221; Adro\u00a0Gul\u00a0Stanikzai, a former cricket coach at the Nangarhar Cricket Academy and a sports commentator, told Al Jazeera.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The team was then encouraged by the love and support that they got from Afghans. Across the country, when Afghanistan is playing, everyone is praying for them to win.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In October, Sharjah Cricket Stadium will host the Afghanistan Premier League T20.<\/p>\n<p>The Emirati ground has\u00a0<span>been the home ground of the Afghanistan team for their international fixtures for over a decade, owing to security concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Back in Kunar, Sarfaraz says he wants to finish his education before competing internationally.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we can&#8217;t speak English properly or have basic knowledge and etiquettes, we won&#8217;t be representing our country in the best way,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><span>Sarfaraz&#8217;s father was injured in a Taliban attack and has lost the ability to walk. His two brothers are the main breadwinners for the family of eight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My brothers are the reason of where I am today. The Taliban denied involvement.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds had gathered to watch the evening game in Sarfaraz&#8217;s hometown.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are completely in shock because I have played several cricket matches in that stadium,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I do worry for my life but my love for cricket just surpasses that fear.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>England and Wales will host the next world cup from May to July next year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can hold our heads high, and this performance gives us pride,&#8221; said\u00a0<span>Asghar Afghan, the co-captain of the Afghan national team, speaking in Dubai after tying with India.\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;Remember, this is a warning for the World Cup teams.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Afghanistan\u00a0recently ended its 2018 Asia Cup journey in Dubai with a series of impressive performances, filling Afghans at home with joy.
