{"id":16722,"date":"2018-09-29T04:24:27","date_gmt":"2018-09-29T04:24:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=16722"},"modified":"2018-09-29T04:24:27","modified_gmt":"2018-09-29T04:24:27","slug":"jail-cant-break-his-spirit-bangladesh-photographers-wife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=16722","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Jail can&#8217;t break his spirit&#8217;: Bangladesh photographer&#8217;s wife"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"155.473973525\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">As anger over the incarceration of renowned\u00a0Bangladeshi photographer and activist Shahidul Alam continues to grow in and outside the South Asian country, his wife said the detention &#8220;can&#8217;t break his spirit&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Alam has languished in a jail in the capital Dhaka for more than 50 days in a case filed under the stringent Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act for &#8220;spreading propaganda and false information against the government&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;His spirits remain high. He jogs and exercises and reads books more rapidly than I can supply them,&#8221; his wife Rahnuma Ahmed told Al Jazeera on Friday after visiting her 63-year-old husband in prison.<\/p>\n<p>He was <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/bangladesh-renowned-photographer-detained-media-comments-180806065359943.html\">arrested on August 5<\/a> shortly after he talked to Al Jazeera and did a Facebook Live broadcast amid massive anti-government student protests that gripped the country.<\/p>\n<p>The protests, he said, were the result of pent-up anger at corruption and an &#8220;unelected government &#8230; clinging on by brute force&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Alam&#8217;s family and lawyer have alleged he was tortured in custody.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The constant pain in his gums persists and chewing is difficult. He did not suffer from any such problems before being picked up,&#8221; Ahmed said.<\/p>\n<p>On September 11, a court rejected his bail application, saying &#8220;a citizen cannot comment or upload any Facebook post on free and fair elections, only a politician can do that&#8221;, according to his lawyer Sara Hossain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why is a citizen being deprived of his liberty so arbitrarily?&#8221; Hossain told Al Jazeera, adding the court made &#8220;manifestly partisan and irrelevant observations&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Hossain is likely to request that Alam be released on bail from a higher court on October 1.<\/p>\n<p>On September 5, the government of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/bangladesh.html\">Bangladesh<\/a> challenged a court order to provide Alam better facilities in prison. For that, he is being wrongly imprisoned,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<h2>Crackdown on dissent<\/h2>\n<p>Hasina&#8217;s government &#8211; since her Awami League party came to power in 2009 &#8211; has been marked by allegations of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/07\/disappearances-extrajudicial-killings-hrw-170705191258625.html\">extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and secret detentions<\/a> of members of the political opposition and anti-government activists.<\/p>\n<p>If convicted, Alam faces 14 years in jail &#8211; a provision of the law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/amnesty-international.html\">Amnesty International<\/a> called &#8220;draconian&#8221;. Human Rights Watch on Tuesday said the law was &#8220;a blow to freedom of speech&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, dozens of civil society groups, including Transparency International Bangladesh, Reporters Without Borders, and the Committee to Protect Journalists <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/calls-grow-release-bangladeshi-photographer-shahidul-alam-180811145247788.html\">issued a statement<\/a> condemning the &#8220;blatant violation&#8221; of Alam&#8217;s right to freedom of expression and called for his &#8220;immediate and unconditional&#8221; release.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/free-shahidul-alam\" target=\"_blank\">change.org petition<\/a> launched by Amnesty <span>for his release\u00a0<\/span>was signed by more than 15,000 of his supporters.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, at least 25 journalists and hundreds of bloggers and Facebook users were prosecuted under the ICT Act after their online content was deemed defamatory or blasphemous.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As anger over the incarceration of renowned\u00a0Bangladeshi photographer and activist Shahidul Alam continues to grow in and outside the South Asian country, his wife said the detention &#8220;can&#8217;t break his spirit&#8221;.
