{"id":16670,"date":"2018-09-28T17:26:06","date_gmt":"2018-09-28T17:26:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=16670"},"modified":"2018-09-28T17:26:06","modified_gmt":"2018-09-28T17:26:06","slug":"saudi-led-coalition-criticizes-un-yemen-rights-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=16670","title":{"rendered":"Saudi-led coalition criticizes UN Yemen rights mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1379121\/middle-east\" readability=\"96\">\n<p>\nLONDON:\u00a0A UN human rights mission to Yemen had its madate extended on Friday despite criticism\u00a0from the internationally recognized government and the Arab military coalition\u00a0that\u00a0it is biased and relies on inaccurate information.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe coalition battling alongside the government against\u00a0the Houthi militia\u00a0said any extension should be decided by the Yemeni administration.<\/p>\n<p>\nThat government of President Abed Rabbo Mansour\u00a0Hadi said\u00a0on Thursday\u00a0it was ending cooperation with the UN investigation into suspected war crimes during more than three years of conflict, AFP reported.<br \/>The United Nations Human Rights Council voted\u00a021 to 8, with 18 abstentions, in favor of a resolution that renewed the investigation for a year.<br \/>A report released last month by the investigation was stronly critisized by the Yemen government and the coalition, which includes Saudi Arabia and the UAE.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Yemeni government said ahead of the vote that it rejected an extension of the mission\u2019s mandate based on the report, which\u00a0contained a number of inaccuracies.<\/p>\n<p>\nHuman Rights Minister Mohammed Askar\u00a0said Yemen&#8217;s own\u00a0national commission of inquiry had already been successful and &#8220;enables us to dispense with any international agencies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cI believe we tried to show goodwill and gave the experts facilities, but the result was a disappointing report,\u201d he\u00a0told Asharq Al-Awsat, the sister paper of Arab News.<\/p>\n<p>\nOne of the errors that the report included is that \u201cit named Abdul-Malik Al-Houthi as leader of the revolution even though he is the biggest criminal in Yemen\u201d, Askar said.\u00a0&#8220;We rejected the extension to show that the report is biased.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Saudi-led coalition also took strong issue with the Aug. 28 report by the panel, which accused both government forces and Houthi militia of violations but said that coalition air strikes had caused \u201cmost of the documented civilian casualties\u201d and voiced \u201cserious concerns about the targeting process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nCoalition spokesman Col. Turki Al-Maliki criticized the \u201cinaccuracy of the information in the report, which was derived from non-governmental organizations and the testimonies of some persons whose circumstances are unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nThe report \u201cfailed to mention Iran\u2019s role in Yemen, and the countless violations perpetrated by the Houthis, both against the Yemeni people and against the kingdom\u201d of Saudi Arabia, Col Al-Maliki said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThese violations include targeting the Kingdom using Iranian ballistic missiles \u2014 aimed at civilian and religious sites,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Houthis have fired more than 200 missiles at Saudi Arabia since it intervened in Yemen in March 2015 when the government was forced\u00a0\u00a0into exile as they closed in on his last stronghold.
