{"id":16238,"date":"2018-09-24T23:27:03","date_gmt":"2018-09-24T23:27:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=16238"},"modified":"2018-09-24T23:27:03","modified_gmt":"2018-09-24T23:27:03","slug":"libyas-coast-guard-rescues-235-migrants-off-western-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=16238","title":{"rendered":"Libya\u2019s coast guard rescues 235 migrants off western coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1377156\/middle-east\" readability=\"56\">\n<p>\nTRIPOLI: Half a million children are in \u201cimmediate danger\u201d in Libya\u2019s capital Tripoli due to fighting, the United Nations children\u2019s fund UNICEF said on Monday.<br \/>Clashes that broke out between rival militias in late August had killed at least 115 people and wounded nearly 400 by Saturday night, according to Libya\u2019s health ministry.<br \/>UNICEF said more than 1,200 families were displaced in the past 48 hours as the clashes intensified in southern Tripoli before pausing on Monday.<br \/>That put the total number of people displaced by the recent fighting at over 25,000, half of whom were children, it said.<br \/>The UN agency\u2019s Middle East and North Africa director, Geert Cappelaere, said children were paying a \u201cheavy toll\u201d and were increasingly being recruited by armed groups.<br \/>\u201cWe see children being prevented from going to school, we see children not having the vaccination that they urgently need,\u201d he said.<br \/>Those whose parents came to Libya with the hope of migrating to Europe by sea suffered doubly, said Cappelaere.<br \/>\u201cThey are already facing dire living conditions, many of them are held in detention,\u201d a situation made worse by \u201cthe violence that is happening today,\u201d he said.<br \/>UNICEF also said schools are increasingly being used to shelter displaced families, which is likely to delay the start of the academic year beyond October 3.<br \/>It said residents are facing food, power and water shortages, adding that the clashes had exacerbated the plight of migrants.<br \/>\u201cHundreds of detained refugees and migrants, including children, were forced to move because of violence.
