{"id":16096,"date":"2018-09-23T23:23:21","date_gmt":"2018-09-23T23:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=16096"},"modified":"2018-09-23T23:23:21","modified_gmt":"2018-09-23T23:23:21","slug":"nepal-set-to-double-tiger-population-under-wwf-global-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=16096","title":{"rendered":"Nepal set to double tiger population under WWF global plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"113.682768924\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Nepal is set to become the first country to double its tiger population as part of the World Wildlife Foundation&#8217;s (WWF) &#8220;Tx2&#8221; programme which aims to double the number of tigers all over the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Nepal&#8217;s tiger population rose to 235 from 121 in 2009, the WWF said in a statement released on Sunday to commemorate World National Conservation Day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">With four years remaining before the 2022 deadline,\u00a0<a href=\"Just%20can't%20leave%20that%20hair-ron%20alone%20\">Nepal<\/a>\u00a0looks set to achieve its goal.<\/p>\n<p>Nepal&#8217;s Secretary of the Ministry of Forests and Environment, <span>Bishwa Nath Oli,\u00a0<\/span>said protecing &#8220;tigers is a top priority of the government&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/imagecache\/mbdresplarge\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/9\/23\/0ce7085ce2144c87a001aa87bea958b1_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/imagecache\/mbdresplarge\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/9\/23\/0ce7085ce2144c87a001aa87bea958b1_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td class=\"caption\">There are nine subspecies of tigers, three of which are extinct [Sue Ogrocki\/AP Photo]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Nepal conducted a national tiger survey between November 2017 and April 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The growing numbers signal a &#8220;successful implementation&#8221; of conservation efforts, the release quoted Oli as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The Tx2 programme aims to double the world tiger population by 2022, which is the year of the tiger in the Chinese calendar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This significant increase in Nepal\u2019s tiger population is proof that when we work together, we can save the planet\u2019s wildlife &#8211; even species facing extinction,&#8221; Leonardo DiCaprio, WWF-US board member and chairman of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which has funded tiger conservation in Nepal\u2019s Bardia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/living-shadow-nepal-rara-national-park-180323090225428.html\">National Park<\/a> and elsewhere since 2010.<\/p>\n<h2>Declining population\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Thirteen countries with tiger ranges agreed to the plan, which hinges on &#8220;encouraging trans-boundary collaboration&#8221; to achieve increased protections and maintain habitats for the endangered creatures.<\/p>\n<p>According to the WWF&#8217;s Tx2 website, there could have been over 100,000 tigers roaming the world a century ago.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous factors, including poaching and habitat loss, led to the decline in numbers.<\/p>\n<p>By 2010, as few as 3,200 were left, the WWF&#8217;s website says.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 13 countries with tiger ranges, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/india.\">India<\/a> has the most &#8211; 2226 as of 2016.
