{"id":16022,"date":"2018-09-23T01:22:40","date_gmt":"2018-09-23T01:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=16022"},"modified":"2018-09-23T01:22:40","modified_gmt":"2018-09-23T01:22:40","slug":"eight-afghan-children-killed-playing-with-unexploded-mortar-shell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=16022","title":{"rendered":"Eight Afghan children killed playing with unexploded mortar shell"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"110\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Eight children, including four siblings, were killed in Afghanistan when a mortar round they were playing with exploded, adding to the ever-growing civilian death toll in the 17-year war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Another six children were wounded in the blast on Friday, including two who had lost limbs and were in a critical condition in a hospital in the northwestern province of Faryab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">All the children were aged between five and 12, <span>relatives said on Saturday<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They found an unexploded mortar shell and brought it near our house,&#8221; Shukrullah, an uncle of four of the children killed, told AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They didn&#8217;t know what it was and were trying to open it when it suddenly exploded.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mohammad Alam, who was a cousin of four of the children, said he heard a &#8220;big explosion&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I rushed to the site and saw the kids covered in blood,&#8221; Alam said from the hospital. &#8220;They had found an unexploded shell and were playing with it when it went off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5833849069001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>Afghanistan war causing record civilian casualties<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>Officials were quick to blame the explosion on the Taliban, which last week captured Koh-e-Sayad village where the children lived.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Thousands of killed kids<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Children are often killed or maimed by explosive devices left over from decades of conflict, carelessly discarded, or deliberately planted.<\/p>\n<p>Civilians, including children, have borne the brunt of the conflict that began with the US-led invasion in 2001 that toppled the Taliban regime.<\/p>\n<p>UN figures show 3,179 children were killed or wounded in 2017, accounting for almost one-third of the total civilian casualties for the year.<\/p>\n<p>Improvised explosive devices, such as remotely detonated or pressure-plate bombs, killed or wounded 545 kids.<\/p>\n<p>Unexploded ordnance claimed the lives of 142 children and wounded 376 in the same period.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eight children, including four siblings, were killed in Afghanistan when a mortar round they were playing with exploded, adding to the ever-growing civilian death toll in the 17-year war.
