A child has drowned after a boat carrying 39 refugees<\/a> capsized off the northern Lebanese coast while attempting to reach Cyprus<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The country’s military said 38 people were rescued from the sinking boat on Saturday and that the child’s body had been retrieved.<\/span><\/p>\n

“A navy patrol unit immediately headed there, retrieved the body of a five-year-old child and rescued the rest” of the passengers, a statement said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Four of those rescued were taken to nearby hospitals with the help of the Lebanese Red Cross, the statement added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lebanon’s Al-Jadeed TV reported that the child who died was a\u00a0<\/span>five-year-old from Palestine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

One million registered refugees<\/h2>\n

Lebanon<\/a> hosts the highest number of Syrian refugees<\/a> in the world per capita, with at least one million registered in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Humanitarian representatives and government officials say the number is likely much higher, since many refugees who have fled Syria’s civil war<\/a> to Lebanon are not officially registered with the United Nations.<\/p>\n

Lebanese authorities have begun organising return trips to refugees willing to go back.<\/span><\/p>\n

But UN officials say with no peace deal in Syria, it is too early for the mass return of refugees.<\/span><\/p>\n
