{"id":15998,"date":"2018-09-22T18:22:31","date_gmt":"2018-09-22T18:22:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15998"},"modified":"2018-09-22T18:22:31","modified_gmt":"2018-09-22T18:22:31","slug":"egypt-court-upholds-mubarak-and-sons-corruption-convictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15998","title":{"rendered":"Egypt: Court upholds Mubarak and sons&#8217; corruption convictions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"118.181080127\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The highest appeals court in Egypt rejected a motion by former president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/hosni-mubarak.html\">Hosni Mubarak<\/a> and his two sons to overturn their corruption convictions related to his nearly 30-year rule.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Egypt&#8217;s Court of Cessation denied the Mubaraks&#8217; appeals on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Mubarak, 90, Gamal, and his third son Alaa were sentenced in 2014 to three years&#8217; impisonment each for using funds originally intended for the maintaince of presidential palaces to build and upgrade private residences.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sons were released in 2015 and Mubarak was freed last year. Alaa and Gamal are currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/egypt-mubarak-sons-arrested-alleged-stock-manipulation-180915134157577.html\">on trial<\/a> for insider trading.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>The court&#8217;s rejection of their appeal &#8211; and Gamal&#8217;s subsequent ineligibility to run for office &#8211;\u00a0<\/span>came after recent comments by the chief editor of state-run Al-Akhbar publications, Yasser Rizq, suggesting frequent public appearances by the younger Mubarak could signal a future presidential run.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;His real crime is insulting the dignity of the Egyptian people,&#8221; Rizq said, alluding to Gamal&#8217;s one-time intention to succeed his father.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Gamal wielded vast influence in Egypt during the final years of Mubarak&#8217;s rule.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rizq first warned Gamal Mubarak against harbouring presidential ambitions in an article published in May. He repeated the warning in a television interview earlier this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rizq said it was not improbable that\u00a0Gamal would strike a political deal with the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood to secure the group&#8217;s return to politics &#8211; in exchange for its support in a presidential bid in 2022, when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/woodward-trump-mocked-egypt-sisi-calling-killer-180912064219643.html\">President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0second term ends.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Real challenge to Sisi?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sisi led the military&#8217;s 2013 ouster of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/egypt.html\">Egypt&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0first freely elected president, Mohammed Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.<\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5372279090001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>Egypt: Ex-president Hosni Mubarak freed after six year-detention<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>Since then Sisi&#8217;s government has overseen a massive crackdown on Morsi&#8217;s supporters, jailing thousands along with secular activists behind the 2011 uprising that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/03\/hosni-mubarak-acquitted-2011-protester-killings-170302152023669.html\">ousted<\/a>\u00a0Mubarak.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt&#8217;s constitution prohibits Sisi from running for a third term in office, but his supporters have raised the spectre of amending the 2014 charter to allow him to do so, or extend the duration of his term.<\/p>\n<p>Sisi won a second, four-year term in office this year in an election in which his only opponent was a little-known politician viewed as among his staunchest supporters.<\/p>\n<p><span>Riza&#8217;s attack on Gamal Mubarak mirrors past campaigns by the pro-government media against potential challengers to Sisi, which have included personal attacks and unsubstantiated accusations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The suggestion that Gamal might strike a deal with the Brotherhood to rise to power carries a thinly veiled threat given the country&#8217;s political climate, where suspicion of links to the group has provided authorities with grounds to imprison critics, including some with established secular credentials.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE: <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The highest appeals court in Egypt rejected a motion by former president Hosni Mubarak and his two sons to overturn their corruption convictions related to his nearly 30-year rule.\u00a0 Egypt&#8217;s Court of Cessation denied the Mubaraks&#8217; appeals on Saturday.
