{"id":15640,"date":"2018-09-19T13:23:30","date_gmt":"2018-09-19T13:23:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15640"},"modified":"2018-09-19T13:23:30","modified_gmt":"2018-09-19T13:23:30","slug":"icc-opens-probe-into-crimes-against-rohingya","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15640","title":{"rendered":"ICC opens probe into crimes against Rohingya"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"115.000430849\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The International Criminal Court (ICC) has launched a preliminary investigation into Myanmar&#8217;s crackdown on the Muslim-majority\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/08\/rohingya-muslims-170831065142812.html\">Rohingya<\/a>\u00a0that forced hundreds of thousands to flee across the border to Bangladesh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The examination will look at a range of allegations against Myanmar&#8217;s security forces that could include the killing of Rohingya civilians, sexual violence, forced disappearance, destruction and looting, ICC prosecutor\u00a0<span>Fatou Bensouda said in a written statement on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;<span>A preliminary examination is not an investigation but a process of examining the information available in order to reach a fully informed determination on whether there is a reasonable basis to proceed with an investigation,&#8221;\u00a0<span>Bensouda added.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/myanmar.html\">Myanmar<\/a> has repeatedly argued that the ICC does not have jurisdiction to investigate the allegations because it is not a party to the Rome Statute, which established the court.<\/p>\n<p><span>The ICC authorised Bensouda to open the case after its judges ruled that the alleged crime of deportation happened partly in Bangladesh, which is a member of the court.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;While Myanmar is not a State Party to the ICC, Bangladesh is.
