{"id":15464,"date":"2018-09-18T04:23:44","date_gmt":"2018-09-18T04:23:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15464"},"modified":"2018-09-18T04:23:44","modified_gmt":"2018-09-18T04:23:44","slug":"russia-communists-protest-against-rigged-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15464","title":{"rendered":"Russia communists protest against &#8216;rigged&#8217; elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"128.632058927\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Hundreds of Russian Communist Party supporters have rallied in\u00a0<span>Vladivostok\u00a0<\/span>against what they said was the brazen rigging of a regional election in favour of a politician backed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/vladimir-putin.html\">President Vladimir Putin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">With 95 percent of the ballots counted, Andrei Ishchenko of the Communist Party, had a five percent lead over a pro-Kremlin candidate in Sunday&#8217;s runoff vote for governor of the Primorye region. But election officials reported a few hours later that, with all the votes counted, the Kremlin party&#8217;s Andrei Tarasenko\u00a0was on top.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Ishchenko told a crowd of hundreds of people in central Vladivostok on Monday that the vote count had been rigged, and urged supporters to protest every evening until the result was overturned.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At least 30,000 votes were stolen from us,&#8221; he told the crowd, saying the results had been rewritten overnight.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"article-quotebox\" readability=\"30\"><p>At least 30,000 votes were stolen from us<\/p>\n<p class=\"blockquote-writer\"><span>Andrei Ishchenko of the Communist Party<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;We shouldn&#8217;t stand for it. We have gathered here today to show the authorities that we are the power here, that we decide what happens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ishchenko had earlier said he would go on hunger strike until the result was annulled.<\/p>\n<p>The upheaval in Vladivostok comes less than a week after Putin <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/putin-attends-russias-vostok-2018-war-games-180913152916164.html\">hosted<\/a> the leaders of China, Japan and South Korea there at a major economic conference.<\/p>\n<p><span>Putin also met with Tarasenko, ahead of the runoff and told him, according to the transcript on the Kremlin website, that &#8220;everything is going to be fine&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span><span>&#8216;Stuffing the ballot boxes&#8217;<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Gennady Zyuganov, the veteran leader of the Communist Party, called the situation &#8220;criminal lawlessness&#8221; and said planned nationwide protests by his party on Saturday would make the rigged election one of their central issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;&#8230; They stopped the vote count for four hours and started stuffing the ballot boxes using special bandit methods,&#8221; Zyuganov told a news briefing in Moscow, calling the imbroglio &#8220;a political Chernobyl&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/imagecache\/mbdresplarge\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/9\/17\/e608f251b7744cb3818f1fde094e398a_19.jpg\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/imagecache\/mbdresplarge\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/9\/17\/e608f251b7744cb3818f1fde094e398a_19.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Andrei Ischenko of the Communist Party <span>said he would go on hunger strike until the result was annulled [<\/span>Yuri Maltsev\/Reuters]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Ella Pamfilova, head of the central election commission, told Ekho Moskvy radio, her officials were analysing the vote and that she would send a special commission to investigate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Putin&#8217;s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the Kremlin was watching the situation and would be guided by Pamfilova.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Earlier this month, the Kremlin suffered several other blows in the regions of Khabarovsk, Khakasia and Vladimir where ruling party candidates failed to win gubernatorial elections in the first round.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Second-round runoffs are scheduled in those regions on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Communists this month also beat United Russia candidates in elections to the regional parliaments of Khakasia, Irkutsk and Ulyanovsk regions.<\/p>\n<p>It was the United Russia party&#8217;s worst performance in regional elections in more than a decade.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of Russian Communist Party supporters have rallied in\u00a0Vladivostok\u00a0against what they said was the brazen rigging of a regional election in favour of a politician backed by President Vladimir Putin.
