{"id":15398,"date":"2018-09-17T17:25:37","date_gmt":"2018-09-17T17:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15398"},"modified":"2018-09-17T17:25:37","modified_gmt":"2018-09-17T17:25:37","slug":"icc-sentences-drcs-jean-pierre-bemba-over-witness-tampering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15398","title":{"rendered":"ICC sentences DRC&#8217;s Jean-Pierre Bemba over witness tampering"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"109.141776938\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The International Criminal Court (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/icc.html\">ICC<\/a>) has sentenced Jean-Pierre\u00a0Bemba, a former vice president and rebel leader in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), for bribing witnesses during his war crimes trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icc-cpi.int\/Pages\/item.aspx?name=pr1407\" target=\"_blank\">ruling<\/a> on Monday, T<span>he\u00a0<\/span><span>Hague-based court handed Bemba a 12 month sentence and a\u00a0<span>300,000 euros ($350,000) fine for tampering with witnesses in an earlier hearing\u00a0<\/span><\/span>over possible\u00a0war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by fighters he sent to suppress a coup in neighbouring\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/central-african-republic.html\">Central African Republic<\/a>\u00a0between October 2002 and 2003.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>ICC Judge\u00a0<\/span><span>Bertram Schmitt said the ruling would provide a &#8220;<span>cautionary example as to what consequences obstructing the administration of justice can have&#8221;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>&#8220;<\/span><\/span>Mr. Bemba&#8217;s acquittal in the main case should have been the end of his exposure to the court, yet he continues to have the spectre of this institution hanging over him,&#8221; Schmitt said.<\/p>\n<p><span>He will not return to jail because of the sentence, having served time after being found\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icc-cpi.int\/Pages\/item.aspx?name=pr1200\" target=\"_blank\">guilty<\/a><span>\u00a0following the war crimes case in 2016. Bemba, who had been in ICC detention since 2008, <\/span>was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icc-cpi.int\/Pages\/item.aspx?name=pr1390\" target=\"_blank\">acquitted<\/a>\u00a0on appeal in June<span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Election uncertainty<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After a decade in prison, Bemba returned to the DRC on August 1 to submit his candidacy for the country&#8217;s December 23 presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>But the 55-year-old, a popular opposition leader, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/drc-struggle-democracy-enters-era-180826134647384.html\">barred<\/a>\u00a0on September 3 from standing because of the conviction for witness tampering.<\/p>\n<p><span>According to DRC law, those found guilty of corruption are prohibited from running for president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera&#8217;s Neave Barker, reporting from Brussels, said it was &#8220;very unclear&#8221; what action Bemba will take following the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bemba could well get on a plane and go back to Kinshasa [the DRC&#8217;s capital], in theory there is nothing to stop him from doing that,&#8221; Barker said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He has hoped ever since the initial charges against him were quashed in June that he was going to be able to launch a presidential campaign to be able to one day lead the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The DRC&#8217;s election commission is expected to publish a final list of candidates for the presidential election on September 19.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE: <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The International Criminal Court (ICC) has sentenced Jean-Pierre\u00a0Bemba, a former vice president and rebel leader in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), for bribing witnesses during his war crimes trial.
