{"id":15380,"date":"2018-09-17T13:26:10","date_gmt":"2018-09-17T13:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15380"},"modified":"2018-09-17T13:26:10","modified_gmt":"2018-09-17T13:26:10","slug":"mangkhut-kills-four-in-china-causes-destruction-in-hong-kong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15380","title":{"rendered":"Mangkhut kills four in China, causes destruction in Hong Kong"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"104.688963211\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">At least four people were killed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/china.html\">China<\/a>&#8216;s southern Guangdong province as a result of Typhoon Mangkhut, Chinese state television has reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Clean-up efforts were under way on Monday, a day after the world&#8217;s biggest storm of the year made landfall in southern China and pummelled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/city\/hong-kong.html\">Hong Kong<\/a> and Macau.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The storm has been downgraded from a typhoon to a tropical storm. Forecasters warned that strong winds and heavy rain will last until Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Mangkhut passed over the northern Philippines on Saturday, where at least 65 have been killed and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/philippines-rescue-efforts-typhoon-mangkhut-toll-rises-180917060440237.html\">rescue efforts are under way<\/a> in hopes of finding survivors in areas hit by landslides.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the storm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/china-hongkong-brace-typhoon-mangkhut-toll-rises-28-180916054503320.html\">made landfall<\/a> in Guangdong province around 5pm local time (09:00 GMT), packing wind speeds of 162 km\/h, while 10-metre-high waves battered the coastline.<\/p>\n<p>More than 2.4 million people were evacuated from seven cities in the province before the storm&#8217;s arrival.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Falling trees<\/h2>\n<p>Of the four fatalities in Guangdong, three died after they were hit by falling trees in Guangzhou while another was killed when a building collapsed in Dongguan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In Hong Kong, Mangkhut made high rises sway and shattered windows. More than 300 were injured.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, commuters in Hong Kong had to clamber over fallen trees and piles of debris to get to work as life started getting back to normal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were trees down all over the place, no cars, no buses,&#8221; lawyer David Milligan, who works in Hong Kong&#8217;s commercial hub of Central, told AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p>The gambling enclave of Macau, meanwhile, closed its casinos for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>South China Morning Post reported 20,000 households were left without power on Sunday in the gambling hub while 1,280 fled to temporary shelters as severe flooding hit low-lying areas.
