{"id":15358,"date":"2018-09-17T10:22:35","date_gmt":"2018-09-17T10:22:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15358"},"modified":"2018-09-17T10:22:35","modified_gmt":"2018-09-17T10:22:35","slug":"erdogan-putin-to-hold-talks-in-sochi-over-idlib-situation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15358","title":{"rendered":"Erdogan, Putin to hold talks in Sochi over Idlib situation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"108.027816412\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Turkish President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/recep-tayyip-erdogan.html\">Recep Tayyip Erdogan<\/a> will meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Sochi to discuss the countries&#8217; disagreement over the future of the Syrian city of Idlib.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Erdogan will hold talks with Putin on Monday on his one-day trip to the Russian city, the Turkish presidential office said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Syrian government has recently announced plans to launch a major military offensive on Idlib province, long controlled by various armed opposition groups and their last bastion in the war-torn country.<\/p>\n<p>Russia and Iran, who back the Syrian government, want to eliminate what they call &#8220;terrorist groups&#8221; in the province, which neighbours Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>Ankara wants a stable ceasefire in the region to disarm these groups while keeping the peace in Idlib.<\/p>\n<p>The UN warns that a full offensive on Idlib would lead to the &#8220;worst humanitarian catastrophe in the 21st century&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Erdogan said that he expected his meeting with Putin to have positive outcomes in order to prevent a humanitarian tragedy in Idlib.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The outcome of our meeting with Putin will be important. I also have visits to the United Nations General Assembly and Germany towards the end of the month,&#8221; said Erdogan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is my wish that, with positive decisions made at these meetings, we will carry out the situation [in Idlib] to a new level. If the situation in Idlib continues as is, the results will be heavy.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During talks in Istanbul on Friday, officials from Turkey, Russia, France and<span class=\"highlight\"><span><span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Germany\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>agreed that any attack on<span class=\"highlight\"><span><span data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\">\u00a0Syria<\/span><\/span><\/span>&#8216;s rebel-held Idlib would have severe results and a political solution must be reached, according to Turkey&#8217;s presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey, Russia and Iran met in Tehran last week but the talks failed to produce any agreement on a ceasefire.<\/p>\n<p>Since the beginning of September, dozens of people have been killed and injured in air raids and attacks by the Syrian government and Russian warplanes, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/thousands-rally-looming-offensive-northwest-syria-180914162627442.html\"><span>activists on the ground<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/thousands-rally-looming-offensive-northwest-syria-180914162627442.html\">took to the streets<\/a>across Idlib on Friday to protest against a potential full-fledged offensive by government forces and their allies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE: <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Sochi to discuss the countries&#8217; disagreement over the future of the Syrian city of Idlib.
