{"id":15153,"date":"2018-09-15T08:23:49","date_gmt":"2018-09-15T08:23:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15153"},"modified":"2018-09-15T08:23:49","modified_gmt":"2018-09-15T08:23:49","slug":"has-china-detained-a-million-uighur-muslims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=15153","title":{"rendered":"Has China detained a million Uighur Muslims?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article-body\" readability=\"84.4954682779\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/china.html\">China<\/a><span>\u00a0has been accused of allegedly\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/million-muslim-uighurs-held-secret-china-camps-panel-180810185817270.html\">detaining<\/a> up to one million Uighur Muslims<span>\u00a0in its Xinjiang region under what UN\u00a0experts have called the &#8220;pretext of countering terrorism and religious extremism&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Over the past decade, human rights groups have documented\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/escape-xinjiang-muslim-uighurs-speak-china-persecution-180907125030717.html\">widespread repression<\/a>\u00a0of this Turkic ethnic minority, from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/04\/china-uighurs-ban-long-beards-veils-xinjiang-170401050336713.html\">banning religious customs<\/a>, to forcing many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/uighur.html\">Uighurs<\/a> to change their names and attend Communist party rallies.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing, however,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/china-state-media-defends-xinjiang-muslim-crackdown-180813055304359.html\">denies allegations<\/a>\u00a0of mass detentions and discrimination.
