{"id":14967,"date":"2018-09-13T18:26:12","date_gmt":"2018-09-13T18:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14967"},"modified":"2018-09-13T18:26:12","modified_gmt":"2018-09-13T18:26:12","slug":"un-warns-of-incalculable-human-cost-in-yemens-hodeidah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14967","title":{"rendered":"UN warns of &#8216;incalculable human cost&#8217; in Yemen&#8217;s Hodeidah"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"146.506457047\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The humanitarian crisis in <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/yemen.html\">Yemen<\/a>\u00a0has worsened &#8220;dramatically&#8221; in the last week since UN-sponsored\u00a0<a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/yemen-geneva-talks-fall-government-delegation-leaves-180908082941894.html\">peace talks collapsed<\/a> and fighting resumed in the port city of Hodeidah.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Lise Grande, UN humanitarian coordinator, said on Thursday that &#8220;hundreds of thousands of lives hang in the balance&#8221; in rebel-held Hodeidah, where &#8220;families are absolutely terrified by the bombardment, shelling and air strikes&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The three-year war has unleashed the <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/yemen-worst-humanitarian-crisis-world-eu-180805070256555.html\">world&#8217;s most urgent humanitarian crisis<\/a> in the nation of 28 million people with 22 million dependent on aid.<\/p>\n<p>The UN warned ongoing fighting in Hodeidah, the entry point for the bulk of Yemen&#8217;s commercial imports and aid supplies, could trigger famine in the impoverished nation where an estimated 8.4 million people are facing starvation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re particularly worried about the Red Sea mill, which currently has 45,000 metric tonnes of food inside, enough to feed 3.5 million people for a month. If the mills are damaged or disrupted, the human cost will be incalculable,&#8221; Grande said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/yemen\/hundreds-thousands-civilians-are-terrified-fighting-hodeidah\">statement<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Battles rage<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"5832845772001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>WATCH: Hunger as a weapon on the rise in conflict zones (1:56)<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>Yemeni forces, backed by a <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> and United Arab Emirates-led coalition, <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/yemeni-army-seizes-key-houthi-supply-routes-hodeidah-180912101213249.html\">seized the main road<\/a> linking Hodeidah to the capital Sanaa, blocking a key supply route for the Houthi rebels in control of the country&#8217;s north.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;The main entrance in Hodeidah leading to Sanaa has been closed after forces backed by the UAE took control of the road,&#8221; a pro-coalition military source told Reuters news agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Residents said the city&#8217;s main eastern gate had been damaged in air strikes and fighting was continuing on secondary streets off the main road.<\/p>\n<p>There was no immediate word from either side of the conflict on their casualties.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors and medics in two hospitals in Hodeida province told the Associated Press news agency that 50 people have been killed in the past 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of civilians have fled their homes in Hodeidah to escape the fighting and heavy smoke was rising above parts of the city, AP quoted officials as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The fighting in Hodeidah intensified following the collapse of UN-sponsored talks\u00a0in Geneva last week after the Houthi delegation failed to show up.<\/p>\n<h2><span>&#8216;Living hell&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Coalition forces &#8211; which aim to restore the internationally recognised government of Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who fled Yemen after the Houthi takeover &#8211; believe their control over Hodeidah by cutting off supply lines would force the rebels to join the negotiating table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, Al Jazeera&#8217;s Andrew Simmons, reporting from neighbouring Djibouti, said there were &#8220;warnings from all quarters that this offensive is the last thing needed in the run-up to an attempt to get some sort of dialogue going&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Griffiths, the UN special envoy on Yemen, is expected to meet Houthi representatives as well as Yemeni government officials living in exile in Saudi Arabia this week in a bid to revive talks.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Meritxell Relano, UNICEF&#8217;s representative in Yemen, said more than 11 million children faced food shortages, disease, displacement, and lack of access to basic services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The conflict has made Yemen a living hell for its children,&#8221; she said. &#8220;An estimated 1.8 million children are malnourished in the country. Nearly 400,000 of them are severely acute malnourished, and they are fighting for their lives every day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the UN, at least 10,000 people have been killed since the Saudi-Emirati-led coalition intervened in Yemen in 2015.
