{"id":14877,"date":"2018-09-13T01:23:13","date_gmt":"2018-09-13T01:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14877"},"modified":"2018-09-13T01:23:13","modified_gmt":"2018-09-13T01:23:13","slug":"philippines-10-million-people-in-the-path-of-mangkhut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14877","title":{"rendered":"Philippines: 10 million people in the path of Mangkhut"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"95.2639553429\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Thousands of people will be evacuated as the most powerful typhoon so far this year roars towards the northern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/philippines.html\">Philippines<\/a>, <span>officials said<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">As of Wednesday, Typhoon Mangkhut was carrying maximum sustained winds of 205km\/h and gusts of up to 255km\/h, according to the Philippine weather bureau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Mangkhut, also referred to in the Philippines as Ompong, was estimated to be 1,145km east of the northern province of Catanduanes <span>and a<\/span>n emergency alert had already been raised. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Teams from the International Committee of the Red Cross were placed on high alert in northern Luzon, where the storm is expected to make landfall on Saturday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re worried for the 10 million people in the Philippines living in the path of this destructive storm, including those who have been displaced several times due to the monsoon rains last July and August,&#8221; Senator Richard Gordon, the chairman of the Philippines Red Cross, said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are preparing our emergency assets and relief items. Our staff and volunteers are on high alert for possible deployment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Forecaster Meno Mendoza said Mangkhut&#8217;s strong winds could whip up storm surges while heavy rain could trigger landslides and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/floods.html\">floods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span>With the predicted path of the typhoon, it could also hit Taiwan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/hong-kong.html\">Hong Kong<\/a> next.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"6.32797427653\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Super Typhoon <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Mangkhut?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Mangkhut<\/a> is located west of Guam with max sustained winds of 140 KT, gusting to 170 KT. The JTWC expects the typhoon to maintain intensity as it approaches the northern <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Philippines?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Philippines<\/a> later this week.
