{"id":14863,"date":"2018-09-12T21:28:46","date_gmt":"2018-09-12T21:28:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14863"},"modified":"2018-09-12T21:28:46","modified_gmt":"2018-09-12T21:28:46","slug":"un-bemoans-unsustainable-palestinian-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14863","title":{"rendered":"UN bemoans unsustainable Palestinian economy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1371176\/middle-east\" readability=\"83\">\n<p>\nRABAT: A law to combat violence against women in Morocco entered into force on Wednesday after years of heated debate.<\/p>\n<p>\nFor the first time women in Morocco have legal protection from \u201cacts considered forms of harassment, aggression, sexual exploitation or ill treatment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe new law also paves the way for victims of violence to be offered support.<\/p>\n<p>\nFamilies minister Bassima Hakkaoui hailed the legislation as \u201cone of the most important texts strengthening the national legal arsenal in the area of equality of the sexes,\u201d in an interview with the official MAP agency.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe text was first drafted five years ago and was adopted by parliament in February, following lengthy debate.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut the law has been deemed inadequate by some, with the former women&#8217;s minister Nouzha Skalli arguing it fails to take into account \u201cinternational definitions\u201d of violence against women.<\/p>\n<p>\nShe has highlighted the example of marital rape, which is not criminalised under the new legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn Morocco, media and rights groups regularly raise the alarm about endemic violence against women.<\/p>\n<p>\nMore than 40 percent of women said they had been \u201cvictims of an act of violence at least once,\u201d in a survey carried out by Morocco&#8217;s High Commission for Planning which surveyed those living in towns and aged between 18 and 64.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe first woman to benefit from the legal change could be a 24-year-old who on Tuesday filed a complaint against three men for harassment, according to Moroccan media.<\/p>\n<p>\nAs authorities begin enforcing the law, a dozen suspects are being held over the alleged gang-rape of a teenage girl.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn a video posted online last month, 17-year-old Khadija Okkarou said she had been kidnapped, raped and tortured by a gang over a period of two months.<\/p>\n<p>\nOkkarou\u2019s testimony triggered a petition signed by thousands of people urging King Mohammed VI to provide her with medical and psychological care.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe next hearing in the case is set for Oct. 10.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RABAT: A law to combat violence against women in Morocco entered into force on Wednesday after years of heated debate.
