{"id":14819,"date":"2018-09-12T14:25:04","date_gmt":"2018-09-12T14:25:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14819"},"modified":"2018-09-12T14:25:04","modified_gmt":"2018-09-12T14:25:04","slug":"herald-sun-reprints-serena-cartoon-welcome-to-the-pc-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14819","title":{"rendered":"Herald Sun reprints Serena cartoon: &#8216;Welcome to the PC world&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"118.926055046\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">A controversial cartoon of US tennis star Serena Williams, showing the player as having a temper tantrum at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">US<\/a>\u00a0Open, has been reprinted in an Australian newspaper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The Herald Sun, owned by Rupert Murdoch&#8217;s News Corp, first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/twitter-users-slam-repugnant-racist-cartoon-serena-williams-180911083536048.html\">published the caricature<\/a> of Williams with exaggerated lips, stomping on her tennis racket on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The image triggered widespread allegations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/racism.html\">racism<\/a> against illustrator Mark Knight.<\/p>\n<p>The Herald Sun and the cartoonist denied the accusation, and despite the reactions and outrage it provoked, the paper reprinted the cartoon on Wednesday under the front page headline &#8220;WELCOME TO PC WORLD&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper wrote in an editorial that <span>&#8220;if the self-appointed censors of Mark Knight get their way on his Serena Williams cartoon, our new politically correct life will be very dull indeed&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The caricature was published <\/span>alongside unflattering cartoons of US President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/11\/profile-president-donald-trump-161109050153947.html\">Donald Trump<\/a> and North Korean Leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/asia-pacific\/2010\/09\/2010927205950221159.html\">Kim Jong-un<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Herald Sun editor Damon Johnston extended the defence on Twitter as he denied any racism or sexism.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It rightly mocks poor behaviour by a tennis legend,&#8221; Johnson tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Blunden managing director of News Corp&#8217;s operations, also supported the cartoonist:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Australia&#8217;s finest cartoonist Mark Knight has the strongest support of his colleagues for his depiction of Serena Williams&#8217; petulance.
