{"id":14803,"date":"2018-09-12T11:22:29","date_gmt":"2018-09-12T11:22:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14803"},"modified":"2018-09-12T11:22:29","modified_gmt":"2018-09-12T11:22:29","slug":"libya-flights-diverted-after-rocket-attack-on-tripoli-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14803","title":{"rendered":"Libya: Flights diverted after rocket attack on Tripoli airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"122.823547215\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Rockets were fired at Libya\u2019s only functioning airport in Tripoli late on Tuesday, forcing flights to be diverted less than a week after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/ceasefire-agreement-reached-tripoli-fighting-180904173018014.html\">UN brokered a fragile truce<\/a> between rival militias in the capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The airport had only reopened on Friday, following a week-long closure due to deadly fighting between militias in and around Tripoli.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">A new group known as the Tripoli Youth Movement claimed responsability for the attack. In a Facebook video posted on Sunday, the group called on maintenance workers to evacuate the airport.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They also demanded that armed militias operating under the internationally-recognised Government National Accord (GNA) give back control of the airport to civilian authorities.\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Reporting from Tripoli, Al Jazeera&#8217;s Mahmoud Abdelwahed said authorities have asked that planes stationed at Mitiga airport be flown out to other facilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Authorities are worried that the planes might get damaged by some of the stray rockets which may land in the area,&#8221; Abdelwahed said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"4.20276497696\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Libya?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Libya<\/a>&#8211; photos from video released by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Tripoli?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Tripoli<\/a> Youth Movement showing the rocket fire (appears to be BM-21 Grad) targeting <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Mitiga?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Mitiga<\/a> Airport <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SAWHcECUuf\">pic.twitter.com\/SAWHcECUuf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Oded Berkowitz (@Oded121351) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Oded121351\/status\/1039797722382049281?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 12, 2018<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There were no reports of casualties or material damage at Mitiga airport as a result of Tuesday\u2019s attack but Libyan television channels reported that several people were wounded by rockets elsewhere, one of which landed in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>A flight bound for Tripoli from neighbouring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/egypt.html\">Egypt<\/a>\u00a0was rerouted to the city of Misrata, located 190 kilometres east of the capital, and airport officials said all flights would be rerouted.<\/p>\n<p>Mitiga, a former military airport in the east of the city, was first opened to civil air traffic after the destruction of Tripoli&#8217;s international airport in the capital&#8217;s south during unrest in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Tripoli has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/libya-chaos-explained-vying-piece-pie-180903061135997.html\">gripped by a wave of violence<\/a> since late August, as rival armed groups vying for control of the capital clashed along its southern districts.<\/p>\n<p>Armed fighters played a critical role in the overthrow of former Libyan leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/muammar-gaddafi.html\">Muammar Gaddafi<\/a> in 2011 but civilian authorities have since struggled to bring them under control.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/isis-isil.html\">ISIL<\/a>, also known as ISIS) claimed responsibility for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/libya-blasts-hit-national-oil-corporation-tripoli-headquarters-180910074911445.html\">a shooting attack on the headquarters of Libya&#8217;s National Oil Corporation<\/a> (NOC) in Tripoli, the group&#8217;s news agency said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The attack on Monday killed two NOC staff and wounded 10, said officials, who described the three shooters who were also killed as &#8220;Africans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The group said that it had been targeting the &#8220;economic interests of oppressing governments funding crusaders,&#8221; according to a statement carried by its Amaq news agency.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first attack of its kind against the leadership of Libya&#8217;s state oil industry.<\/p>\n<p>Libya has been divided into rival administrations but the NOC had continued to function relatively normally across the country, which relies on oil exports for most of its income.<\/p>\n<p>Fighters loyal to ISIL have previously carried out attacks in Tripoli and other towns, despite having lost their stronghold in the central city of Sirte late in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>In May, ISIL claimed a deadly attack on the national election commission offices in Tripoli.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE: <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rockets were fired at Libya\u2019s only functioning airport in Tripoli late on Tuesday, forcing flights to be diverted less than a week after the UN brokered a fragile truce between rival militias in the capital.
