{"id":14677,"date":"2018-09-11T10:22:53","date_gmt":"2018-09-11T10:22:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14677"},"modified":"2018-09-11T10:22:53","modified_gmt":"2018-09-11T10:22:53","slug":"libya-italian-foreign-minister-meets-haftar-in-benghazi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14677","title":{"rendered":"Libya: Italian foreign minister meets Haftar in Benghazi"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"117.963376507\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Italy&#8217;s top diplomat held talks with General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/khalifa-haftar.html\">Khalifa Haftar<\/a>, leader of the self-declared Libyan National Army (LNA) in a bid to strengthen ties, the Italian foreign ministry said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanese&#8217;s trip on Monday to the eastern city of Benghazi comes as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/italy.html\">Italy<\/a>&#8216;s wider attempt to stabilise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/libya.html\">Libya<\/a> and move the legislative process forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The two men &#8220;had a long and cordial conversation in Benghazi, relaunching Libya&#8217;s close relationship with Italy in a climate of consolidated trust,&#8221; the Italian foreign ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Italy, a key supporter of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/un.html\">UN<\/a>-backed government of Fayez al-Sarraj in Tripoli, wants to &#8220;maintain an active dialogue with all well-intentioned actors in Libya,&#8221; Milanesi said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The current political path must be completed, in particular through free and fair elections, held under adequate security conditions,&#8221; he added, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/france.html\">France<\/a> pushed for elections before the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The ministry said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/02\/haftar-vies-power-libya-shifting-sands-180226143054107.html\">Haftar<\/a> &#8220;expressed his appreciation for Italy&#8217;s foreign policy, which Libya can&#8217;t do without.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Marshal Haftar added that he was ready to contribute to actively support security, stabilisation and dialogue in the country, for the good of all Libyans,&#8221; the ministry said, without elaborating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The LNA, in a statement, said the two men discussed &#8220;the upcoming Libyan elections and ways of guaranteeing their transparency&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Last Thursday however, Haftar criticised Italy, saying those &#8220;implementing their [Italy&#8217;s] demands are a real problem&#8221;, a veiled reference to the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The GNA has been unable to form a functioning army or regular security forces, instead relying on autonomous militias to enforce security in Tripoli.<\/p>\n<p>Militias formed the backbone of the uprising that toppled long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi but the GNA has failed to bring the groups under control.<\/p>\n<p>Since then rival administrations, including one allied with Haftar and based in the remote east, and the militias have competed for authority and oil wealth in the north African country.<\/p>\n<p><span>Accused by his opponents of wanting to establish a new military dictatorship, Haftar refuses to recognise the authority of Sarraj&#8217;s GNA.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE: <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Italy&#8217;s top diplomat held talks with General Khalifa Haftar, leader of the self-declared Libyan National Army (LNA) in a bid to strengthen ties, the Italian foreign ministry said.
