They do not want to work hard to feed a large family and that is why they opt for birth controls and end up with one or two children only,&#8221; he said at a public rally in Meatu on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Magufuli, who has two children, said it was &#8220;important to reproduce&#8221; and warned Tanzanians against what he said was bad advice provided by outsiders.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have travelled to Europe and elsewhere and have seen the harmful effects of birth control. Some countries are now facing declining population growth. They are short on manpower,&#8221; he was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecitizen.co.tz\/News\/Magufuli-advises-against-birth-control\/1840340-4751990-4h8fqpz\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">quoted<\/a> as saying by The Citizen publication.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have cattle. You are big farmers. You can feed your children. Why then resort to birth control?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;This is my opinion, I see no reason to control births in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/tanzania.html\">Tanzania<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Legislators on Monday criticised the comments, according to local media, saying they are not consistent with national policy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cecil Mwambe, an MP, said the country&#8217;s health insurance scheme can only accommodate a maximum of four children from one family.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker of Parliament Job Ndugai meanwhile said the president&#8217;s comments were advisory and did not represent a governmental position,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.africanews.com\/2018\/09\/10\/tanzania-mp-says-magufuli-s-position-on-contraception-is-inconsistent-with\/\" target=\"_blank\">regional media reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Social media users also reacted angrily to Magufuli&#8217;s speech, with many pointing out that womens&#8217; right to choose any method of contraception and have access to family planning information is enshrined in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.achpr.org\/files\/instruments\/women-protocol\/achpr_instr_proto_women_eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Maputo Protocol<\/a>, an African charter women&#8217;s rights.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"8.70769230769\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MaputoProtocol?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MaputoProtocol<\/a> still Art.14 on rights of women in Africa include.<\/p>\n<p>??the right to choose any method of contraception;<br \/>??the right to have family planning education.<\/p>\n<p>These rights suffer greatly when leaders force their own views on women&#8217;s reproductive health<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Tanzania?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Tanzania<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 AfricanFeminism (AF) (@AfriFeminists) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AfriFeminists\/status\/1039161081745338373?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 10, 2018<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Tanzania is home to some 55.5 million people, according to the World Bank, up from 10 million when it gained independence in 1961.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/06\/world-population-reach-98-billion-2050-170622052905252.html\">has predicted<\/a> that Africa&#8217;s population will double to around 2.5 billion people by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>Magufuli&#8217;s speech mirrors one given by Ugandan President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/programmes\/talktojazeera\/2017\/04\/yoweri-museveni-times-elected-dictator-170429102326955.html\">Yoweri Museveni<\/a> on Sunday, when he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yowerikmuseveni.com\/address-national-state-affairs\">told journalists<\/a> he had rejected the advice of &#8220;outsiders&#8221; who warned against population growth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What superior intelligence do you have to think that you can understand the problem in my house better than we the occupants?,&#8221; said Museveni. &#8220;If there is a problem in our house, we the occupants will solve it.
