{"id":14577,"date":"2018-09-10T16:26:07","date_gmt":"2018-09-10T16:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14577"},"modified":"2018-09-10T16:26:07","modified_gmt":"2018-09-10T16:26:07","slug":"never-seen-a-child-like-this-hunger-takes-toll-on-chads-young","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14577","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Never seen a child like this&#8217;: Hunger takes toll on Chad&#8217;s young"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"80.1020408163\">\n<p class=\"default\"><span lang=\"FR\"><strong>Ndjamena, Chad<\/strong> &#8211; S<\/span><span>ince the fall in the price of<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"FR\">oil<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span>in 2015<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/chad.html\">Chad<\/a> has been struggling to deal with an economic crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"default\"><span lang=\"FR\">The main construction sites in the capital, Ndjamena, are abandoned, the market activities have suffered a slowdown and the salaries of state workers, including police and army officers, have been reduced as part of an austerity programme known locally as<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hyperlink0\">&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imf.org\/external\/pubs\/ft\/scr\/2016\/cr16364.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">the 16 measures<\/a>&#8220;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"default\"><span lang=\"FR\">Chad&#8217;s health sector has been particularly affected &#8211; the national health budge<\/span><span>t was<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">\u00a0cut in<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span>half between 2013 and 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"default\"><span>According to a report by\u00a0<span class=\"hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2018\/07\/chad-people-forced-to-pay-a-heavy-price-for-harsh-austerity-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\">Amnesty<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2018\/07\/chad-people-forced-to-pay-a-heavy-price-for-harsh-austerity-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\">International<\/a><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"FR\">, doctors&#8217;<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span>salaries have<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"FR\">de<\/span><span>creased from 517,000 to 317,000<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span lang=\"FR\">\u00a0Central African francs<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0a<\/span><\/span><span>\u00a0month<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">\u00a0($913 to $560).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"default\"><span>The effect of the crisis is evident is <\/span><span lang=\"FR\">h<\/span><span lang=\"PT\">ospitals <\/span><span lang=\"FR\">and health centres,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span>where medical staff face an increasing number of malnutrition cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"default\"><span class=\"hyperlink0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanitarianresponse.info\/sites\/www.humanitarianresponse.info\/files\/assessments\/draft_rapport_smart_tchad_27092017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">A 2017 SMART survey<\/a><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span>found that the prevalence of severe acute malnutrition in <\/span><span lang=\"FR\">N&#8217;Djamena\u00a0<\/span><span>stands at<\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span lang=\"FR\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span>4.9 percent, more than twice<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"hyperlink0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/nutrition\/topics\/malnutrition\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">the emergency level<\/a><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>set by the World Health Organization. Nationwide,<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">\u00a0an estimated<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hyperlink0\"><span><a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/sites\/reliefweb.int\/files\/resources\/chad_2018-06-14.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">four million people<\/a>, out of 15 million,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"apple-converted-space\"><span lang=\"FR\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"FR\">are food insecure. By the end of the year, the country&#8217;s health facilities are expected to receive more than 262,000 children<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">, up to five years<\/span><\/span><span> old<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">, who <\/span><\/span><span lang=\"FR\">suffer from severe acute malnutrition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"default\"><span>At the <\/span><span lang=\"FR\">Chad-China Friendship Hospital, the <\/span><span>number of malnourished children in need of treatment has doubled over the past 12 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"default\">&#8220;This year is exceptional,&#8221; says Veronica Ladangbe, who has worked as a nurse at the hospital for three years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default\">&#8220;At the beginning of June, we even had mothers on the floor, we could no longer enter this room.
