Ndjamena, Chad<\/strong> – S<\/span>ince the fall in the price of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>oil\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in 2015<\/span>, Chad<\/a> has been struggling to deal with an economic crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n

The main construction sites in the capital, Ndjamena, are abandoned, the market activities have suffered a slowdown and the salaries of state workers, including police and army officers, have been reduced as part of an austerity programme known locally as\u00a0<\/span><\/span>“the 16 measures<\/a>“.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chad’s health sector has been particularly affected – the national health budge<\/span>t was<\/span>\u00a0cut in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>half between 2013 and 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to a report by\u00a0Amnesty<\/a>\u00a0International<\/a><\/span><\/span>, doctors’<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>salaries have\u00a0<\/span><\/span>de<\/span>creased from 517,000 to 317,000<\/span>\u00a0Central African francs<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0month<\/span>\u00a0($913 to $560).<\/span><\/p>\n

The effect of the crisis is evident is <\/span>h<\/span>ospitals <\/span>and health centres,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>where medical staff face an increasing number of malnutrition cases.<\/span><\/p>\n

A 2017 SMART survey<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>found that the prevalence of severe acute malnutrition in <\/span>N’Djamena\u00a0<\/span>stands at<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>4.9 percent, more than twice\u00a0<\/span>the emergency level<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>set by the World Health Organization. Nationwide,<\/span>\u00a0an estimated\u00a0<\/span><\/span>four million people<\/a>, out of 15 million,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>are food insecure. By the end of the year, the country’s health facilities are expected to receive more than 262,000 children, up to five years<\/span><\/span> old, who <\/span><\/span>suffer from severe acute malnutrition.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the <\/span>Chad-China Friendship Hospital, the <\/span>number of malnourished children in need of treatment has doubled over the past 12 months.<\/span><\/p>\n

“This year is exceptional,” says Veronica Ladangbe, who has worked as a nurse at the hospital for three years.<\/p>\n

“At the beginning of June, we even had mothers on the floor, we could no longer enter this room. As the country is in crisis, it is hard for the poorest.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
