{"id":14493,"date":"2018-09-09T21:24:43","date_gmt":"2018-09-09T21:24:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14493"},"modified":"2018-09-09T21:24:43","modified_gmt":"2018-09-09T21:24:43","slug":"syria-rebel-held-areas-bombed-as-turkey-reinforces-outposts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14493","title":{"rendered":"Syria: Rebel-held areas bombed as Turkey reinforces outposts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"171.893491124\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><strong>Antakya, Turkey &#8211; <\/strong>Russian-backed Syrian government forces have pounded rebel-held areas in northwest Syria, killing<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>at least five people in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/tehran-talks-syria-russia-forces-step-idlib-attacks-180908182728793.html\">second day of heavy bombardment<\/a>, according to rescuers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The intensified strikes on Sunday, including air attacks, shelling and helicopter-dropped barrel bombs, targeted villages in southern Idlib and northern Hama provinces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The escalation comes amid growing fears over a seemingly imminent all-out offensive against the densely populated Idlib province, the last rebel bastion in Syria.<\/p>\n<p><span>A baby and a young child were killed in the village of Habeit in southern Idlib in a barrel bomb attack, a<\/span>ccording to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/programmes\/witness\/2016\/08\/syria-white-helmets-160812150421487.html\">White Helmets<\/a>, a civil defence group operating in rebel-held areas.<\/p>\n<p>Three others, including a rebel officer, were killed in air raids and shelling that struck the\u00a0<span>northern Hama province.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Abd al-Karim al-Rahmoun, a member of the White Helmets in northern Hama, said that about half of the local population had left the sparsely populated region to escape the bombardment.<\/p>\n<p>Activists told Al Jazeera that while hundreds of people have been fleeing the attacks in northern Hama and southern Idlib provinces, there has not been a significant wave of civilians moving towards the north.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, the activists said, people would leave their villages early in the morning and return after sunset once the bombardment stopped.<\/p>\n<p>According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), over the past 72 hours, forces loyal to Syrian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/middleeast\/2007\/07\/200852518514154964.html\">Bashar al-Assad<\/a> and his Russian ally have hit rebel-held areas 1,060 times with air attacks, shelling and barrel bombs.<\/p>\n<p>In response, al-Jabha al-Wataniya lil-Tahrir (NLF), a major armed opposition group, on Sunday shelled government forces&#8217; positions in northern Hama, SOHR reported.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, another convoy of Turkish military vehicles crossed into Idlib province on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past 10 days, a number of similar convoys carrying weapons and armoured cars have entered northern Syria to reinforce 12 observation points manned by Turkish soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>These outposts, which are\u00a0<span>located in rebel-held areas in western Aleppo, northern Hama and Idlib provinces,\u00a0<\/span>were established under the de-escalation agreements reached by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/turkey.html\">Turkey<\/a>, Iran and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[These reinforcements are] a sign that Turkey treats the issue of Idlib very seriously and it is not going to easily turn a blind eye on any Russian, regime or Iranian military design for it,&#8221; said Galip Dalay, director of research at the Istanbul-based Sharq Forum.<\/p>\n<p><span>Dalay said\u00a0<\/span>Turkey would not withdraw its troops from the observation posts any time soon, unless it reached an agreement with Russia, Iran and the Syrian government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At this stage, I don&#8217;t see a deal that exists,&#8221; he said. &#8220;During this period, targeted attacks will continue &#8230; but will not produce any big waves of refugees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/9\/5\/3a5a33f180274d098bf82394aa8b9888_6.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/9\/5\/3a5a33f180274d098bf82394aa8b9888_6.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Already hosting more than three million Syrian refugees, Turkey is keen to avoid a full-fledged government offensive. Its call for a ceasefire, however, was rejected on Friday by Russia at a summit in Iran&#8217;s capital, Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters earlier on Sunday, Suleyman Soyli, Turkey&#8217;s interior minister, warned of the possibility of mass displacement in the event of a large-scale military offensive on Idlib.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We care about humanity and we won&#8217;t give up. We will not be responsible for a migration wave in case of possible attacks [on Idlib],&#8221; <span>Soyli\u00a0<\/span>said.<\/p>\n<p><span>The northwestern province bordering Turkey is home to an estimated three million people, half of whom are internally displaced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Soyli added that 255,300 Syrians have returned to their homes over the past two years, including 160,000 who went to the &#8220;Euphrates Shield region&#8221; in northern Aleppo province, which rebel groups and the Turkish army took over from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/isis-isil.html\">ISIL<\/a>, also known as\u00a0ISIS) in 2016.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Antakya, Turkey &#8211; Russian-backed Syrian government forces have pounded rebel-held areas in northwest Syria, killing\u00a0at least five people in a second day of heavy bombardment, according to rescuers.
