{"id":14447,"date":"2018-09-09T14:22:40","date_gmt":"2018-09-09T14:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14447"},"modified":"2018-09-09T14:22:40","modified_gmt":"2018-09-09T14:22:40","slug":"serena-williams-sexism-and-a-thief-osaka-wins-dramatic-us-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14447","title":{"rendered":"Serena Williams, sexism, and a thief: Osaka wins dramatic US Open"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"200.766176471\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The US Open women&#8217;s singles final has sparked uproar and controversy following a landmark victory for Japan&#8217;s Naomi Osaka over Serena Williams in a dramatic match, which saw the US tennis star penalised for a string of bad behaviour.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The 20-year-old Japanese-Haitian claimed her first Grand Slam title on Saturday, beating her childhood idol and six-time champion 6-2, 6-4 in 1 hour and 19 mins in Flushing Meadows, New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;It was always my dream to play Serena in the US Open final, so I&#8217;m really glad I was able to do that,&#8221; a tearful Osaka said at the trophy presentation.<\/p>\n<p>But her post-match celebration was overshadowed by what Williams later called &#8220;sexist&#8221; officiating<span>, as the partisan home crowd booed the match officials.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With the first set under the Japanese player&#8217;s belt, Williams<span>\u00a0<span>clashed with the chair umpire Carlos Ramos when she was given a warning for receiving coaching &#8211; not permissible at Grand Slams.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/9\/8\/6d5e4082871c4e829ddbe16c6d0c7c18_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/9\/8\/6d5e4082871c4e829ddbe16c6d0c7c18_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td class=\"caption\" readability=\"5\">\n<p>Serena Williams argued with tournament officials [Robert Deutsch\/USA Today Sports via Reuters]<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A few games later, Williams, who was seeking\u00a0a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title, received a second warning and a point penalty for breaking her racket.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You owe me an apology,&#8221; Williams said, arguing about the coaching violation. &#8220;I have never cheated in my life!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The 36-year-old Olympic champion was later docked a game at 4-3 for calling the Portuguese official a &#8220;thief&#8221;, which allowed Osaka to serve for the match and seal the historic victory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve seen other men call other umpires several things,&#8221; Williams said during her press conference.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m here fighting for women&#8217;s rights and for women&#8217;s equality and for all kinds of stuff.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For me to say &#8216;thief&#8217; and for him to take a game, it made me feel like it was a sexist remark. He&#8217;s never taken a game from a man because they said &#8216;thief&#8217;. When a man does the same, he&#8217;s &#8220;outspoken&#8221; and there are no repercussions,&#8221;\u00a0<span>said Billie Jean King, a former world number one. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;<\/span>Thank you, @serenawilliams, for calling out this double standard.
