{"id":14353,"date":"2018-09-08T16:26:25","date_gmt":"2018-09-08T16:26:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14353"},"modified":"2018-09-08T16:26:25","modified_gmt":"2018-09-08T16:26:25","slug":"pentagon-chief-mattis-holds-talks-in-uae-after-yemen-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14353","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon chief Mattis holds talks in UAE after Yemen warning"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"112.434529583\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">US Defence Secretary James Mattis has held talks with Abu Dhabi&#8217;s crown prince in the United Arab Emirates (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-arab-emirates.html\">UAE<\/a>), days after warning the Gulf state that Washington&#8217;s support for its military intervention in Yemen was not unconditional.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Mohammed bin Zayed, the crown prince, tweeted on Saturday that his meeting with the Pentagon chief late on Friday covered &#8220;the enhancing of defence and military ties&#8221; and &#8220;issues of mutual interest.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">He did not give further details.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\"><span>On August 28, Mattis warned that the United States could end its support for the Saudi-UAE military alliance fighting Yemen&#8217;s Houthi rebels\u00a0<\/span>amid an international outcry over the deaths of dozens of children in coalition air raids.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\"><span>Twin attacks south of the rebel-held Red Sea port of Hodeidah on August 23 killed 26 children, according to the United Nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/yemen-dozens-children-killed-wounded-school-bus-attack-180809085843444.html\">August 9 air raid <\/a>in Houthi-held Saada province killed 51 people, including 40 children.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"xmsonormal\">US support<\/h2>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\"><span><span>The US provides weapons, aerial refuelling, intelligence and targeting information to the coalition.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\"><span>Last month, Mattis said that the US has been working with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\"><span>Saudi Arabia<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-arab-emirates.html\"><span>UAE<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0to improve targeting and recognises that tragedies have occurred.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">&#8220;It is not unconditional,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/mattis-backs-saudi-uae-alliance-yemeni-deaths-180828151535451.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mattis said<\/a>, of Washington&#8217;s backing to the coalition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"xmsonormal\">&#8220;Our conduct there is to try and keep the human cost of innocents being killed accidentally to the absolute minimum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Yemen remains wracked by violence since the Houthis overran much of the country, including the capital, Sanaa, in 2014.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The conflict escalated in March 2015 when Saudi Arabia and allies &#8211; who accuse the Houthis of being Iranian proxies &#8211; launched a massive air campaign in Yemen aimed at rolling back rebel gains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Iran and the Houthis deny the accusations.<\/p>\n<p>Now entering its fourth year, the war has pushed more than 22 million people &#8211; half of whom are children &#8211; to seek humanitarian assistance.<\/p>\n<p><span>According to the UN, more than 10,000 people have been killed in the war in Yemen &#8211; a death toll that has not been updated in years and is certain to be far higher.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE: <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US Defence Secretary James Mattis has held talks with Abu Dhabi&#8217;s crown prince in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), days after warning the Gulf state that Washington&#8217;s support for its military intervention in Yemen was not unconditional.
