{"id":14331,"date":"2018-09-08T12:24:32","date_gmt":"2018-09-08T12:24:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14331"},"modified":"2018-09-08T12:24:32","modified_gmt":"2018-09-08T12:24:32","slug":"egypt-sentences-75-to-death-over-rabaa-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=14331","title":{"rendered":"Egypt sentences 75 to death over Rabaa protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"93.3901064496\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">An Egyptian court has sentenced 75 people to death, including senior leaders of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/06\/muslim-brotherhood-explained-170608091709865.html\">Muslim Brotherhood<\/a>, over a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/inpictures\/2014\/08\/egypt-rabaa-cairo-massacre-201481213185826678.html\">2013 sit-in protest in Cairo<\/a> that ended with the killing of hundreds of protesters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Senior Brotherhood leaders Essam el-Erian and Mohamed Beltagi were sentenced to death, while Mohamed Badie, the Brotherhood&#8217;s spiritual leader, was handed a life sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Prominent photojournalist Mahmoud Abu Zeid, also known as Shawkan, was handed a five-year sentence but should walk free for time served. He was arrested in August 2013 while covering the killings in Cairo.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyers for Shawkan said he would be out in a &#8220;few days&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Those sentenced on Saturday are accused of security-related offences, including incitement to violence and organising illegal protests.<\/p>\n<p>On August 14, 2013, police dispersed a mass sit-in protest in Cairo&#8217;s Rabaa al-Adawiya Square. The security forces killed more than 800 people in a matter of hours, in what <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/egypt-years-rabaa-massacre-180813145929087.html\">Human Rights Watch (HRW)\u00a0concluded<\/a> &#8220;likely amounted to crimes against humanity&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Government forces moved in with armoured vehicles, bulldozers, and hundreds of security forces moving in the early hours.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/human-rights-watch.html\">HRW<\/a>, about 85,000 protesters joined the sit-in, which extended for over 45 days and grew larger and more organised with time.<\/p>\n<p>The protest was staged by supporters of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/mohamed-morsi.html\">Mohamed Morsi<\/a>, Egypt&#8217;s first elected president and Muslim Brotherhood leader, who was overthrown by the military a few weeks earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands were arrested on the day of the massacre and in the months following.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE: <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Egyptian court has sentenced 75 people to death, including senior leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, over a 2013 sit-in protest in Cairo that ended with the killing of hundreds of protesters.
