{"id":13973,"date":"2018-09-05T19:24:00","date_gmt":"2018-09-05T19:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=13973"},"modified":"2018-09-05T19:24:00","modified_gmt":"2018-09-05T19:24:00","slug":"iraqi-resort-a-macabre-emblem-of-war-and-state-decay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=13973","title":{"rendered":"Iraqi resort a macabre emblem of war and state decay"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1367106\/middle-east\" readability=\"68\">\n<p>\nHABBANIYAH, Iraq: In the 1980s, Iraq\u2019s Lake Habbaniyah was a tourist hotspot, popular with wealthy newlyweds and so luxurious it was even a haunt of dictator Saddam Hussein and his fearsome entourage.<br \/>Top-notch restaurants, flower gardens and pristine lakeside bungalows saw Habbaniyah Tourism City pull in clients from across the Middle East and beyond.<br \/>But like much of Iraq, this oasis \u2014 located between Fallujah and Ramadi \u2014 has fallen into disrepair since the US-led military coalition toppled Saddam 15 years ago.<br \/>\u201cThe tourist complex is terribly degraded,\u201d admits 60-year-old Karim Turki, who has spent nearly half his life running communications for the state-run complex.<br \/>Standing in front of a bungalow festooned with torn electric wires, he laments a \u201cparadise lost.\u201d<br \/>Piles of garbage, drained swimming pools and a merry-go-round featuring limbless horses create the impression of a ghost town.<br \/>Under the American occupation, armed extremist groups in 2006 and 2007 installed operations rooms in the sprawling complex\u2019s deserted hotel and bungalows.<br \/>Iraq\u2019s police retook control in 2008 and the resort staged a brief revival \u2014 amateur jet skiers returned to the still-sparkling lake and families enjoyed picnics on the shore.<br \/>In a bid to attract a rush of new foreign visitors, a Turkish firm was contracted to revive the facilities around the vast artificial lake, which was created in 1956.<br \/>But it was all in vain.<br \/>After a few months, the firm threw in the towel.<br \/>The zone became a new theater of sectarian violence, culminating in the Daesh group taking control.<br \/><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_Ar-k_Z9Cug?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\nDuring the Iraqi army\u2019s long offensive to dislodge IS, the state requisitioned the resort\u2019s 500 bungalows and 265-room hotel to accommodate some of those displaced by the latest round of conflict.<br \/>While the government declared victory over the jihadists in December and Iraqi tourism has begun to revive, the days of access roads to Habbaniyah being clogged with traffic jams are long gone.<br \/>But there has been a trickle of visitors \u2014 some keen to cool off briefly in the summer heat, others seeking a longer trip down memory lane.<br \/>\u201cPeople come to Habbaniyah today to remember the good old times,\u201d Turki says.<br \/>Saad Alani honeymooned on the lake in the early 1990s, during its golden age.<br \/>He ventured back last year \u2014 a mistake, he says.<br \/>\u201cThe place has become a dump.
