{"id":13815,"date":"2018-09-04T09:25:38","date_gmt":"2018-09-04T09:25:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=13815"},"modified":"2018-09-04T09:25:38","modified_gmt":"2018-09-04T09:25:38","slug":"new-yorker-drops-steve-bannon-from-festival-after-outcry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=13815","title":{"rendered":"New Yorker drops Steve Bannon from festival after outcry"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"145.306616257\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>The New Yorker magazine has cancelled plans to interview former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon during its annual festival next month, after numerous panelists announced they would drop out if he remained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">David Remnick, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/us.html\">US<\/a>-based magazine&#8217;s editor-in-chief, announced the reversal on Twitter on Monday when the festival&#8217;s lineup was met immediate backlash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve thought this through and talked to colleagues &#8211; and I&#8217;ve re-considered,&#8221; Remnick, who has repeatedly denounced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/donald-trump.html\">US President Donald Trump<\/a> and his administration, wrote in a statement of his decision on Bannon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is a better way to do this. In what I would call a defining moment, David Remnick showed he was gutless when confronted by the howling online mob,&#8221; he said. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since leaving the White House last year, Bannon has continued to champion right-wing causes, including supporting British anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson, who was freed from prison last month after winning a legal challenge over contempt charges.<\/p>\n<p>He has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/07\/steve-bannon-planning-foundation-boost-europe-180721191340230.html\">announced<\/a> plans to set up a foundation in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/regions\/europe.html\">Europe<\/a> called &#8220;The Movement&#8221; to spark a populist right-wing revolt.<\/p>\n<p>Bannon is scheduled to appear September 15 at The Economist&#8217;s &#8220;Open Future&#8221; festival in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Economist, festival attendees will &#8220;discuss the most urgent issues of our time and remake the case for liberal values&#8221;. At least one guest already plans to drop out.<\/p>\n<p>Several activists, filmmakers, writers and journalists condemned the New Yorker&#8217;s invitation to Bannon, claiming the magazine was providing him with a platform to propagate white-nationalist views.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"7.8643533123\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">He created an online home for white nationalists to groom and grow their violent base.
