{"id":13759,"date":"2018-09-03T22:23:13","date_gmt":"2018-09-03T22:23:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=13759"},"modified":"2018-09-03T22:23:13","modified_gmt":"2018-09-03T22:23:13","slug":"police-use-tear-gas-to-disperse-crowd-from-burned-down-rio-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=13759","title":{"rendered":"Police use tear gas to disperse crowd from burned down Rio museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"122.46018992\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Rio de Janeiro riot police fired tear gas and pepper spray on Monday to keep an angry large crowd from entering the remains of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/brazil.html\">Brazil<\/a>&#8216;s National Museum after it burned down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Several hundred people tried to forcibly get inside the museum &#8211; Latin America&#8217;s largest &#8211; in an attempt to see what ancient pieces were destroyed by the major blaze on Sunday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The rising tensions reflect anger over the destruction of the much-loved yet dilapidated museum, which suffered from declining federal funding in recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Outside the entrance to the elegant park that houses the 200-year-old former Imperial Palace, angry protesters called on the government to rebuild the museum while trying to make their way through the gates that surround the grounds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our community is very mobilised and very indignant,&#8221; said Roberto Leher, the rector of the Rio de Janeiro federal university, which administers the museum. &#8220;We all knew the building was vulnerable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Monday firefighters were trying to put out the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/massive-fire-rips-200-year-rio-national-museum-180903053116437.html\">last of the flames<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ancient artifacts<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The museum had a collection of 20 million items, including Egyptian and Greco-Roman artifacts and the oldest human skull found in the Western hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p><span>Although the walls remained standing, much of the inside of the building appeared to be gutted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The museum had suffered significant budget cuts, leading it to close in 2015 because of maintenance issues.<\/p>\n<p>The building, which opened in 1818, was once the home of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/portugal.html\">Portuguese<\/a>\u00a0royal family.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/9\/3\/83d0f37661a747969261b26a9f690e36_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/9\/3\/83d0f37661a747969261b26a9f690e36_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Students and National Museum employees protest outside the institution on Monday [Silvia Izquierdo\/AP]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Authorities have yet to say what caused Sunday&#8217;s fire.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s Culture Minister Sergio Leitao told the Estado de SPaulo newspaper the blaze was likely started by either an electrical short-circuit or a homemade paper hot-air balloon that may have landed on the roof.<\/p>\n<p>Launching such balloons is a long-held tradition in Brazil and they routinely cause fires.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>&#8216;Tragedy foretold&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The museum also boasted a large collection of fossils, 26,000 in total. Among them were a dinosaur skeleton discovered in Brazil&#8217;s central Minas Gerais and several specimens of species that have now disappeared, such as giant sloths and sabre-toothed tigers.<\/p>\n<p>The fire stirred emotions in Brazil, whose angry electorate is reeling from a frail economy, widespread graft, and rising violence ahead of an unpredictable presidential election in October.<\/p>\n<p>Renato Rodriguez Cabral, a teacher in the geology and paleontology department, said the museum&#8217;s decline did not happen overnight.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This was a tragedy foretold,&#8221; Cabral said as he hugged students and co-workers. &#8220;Successive governments would not provide funds, they would not invest in infrastructure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE: <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rio de Janeiro riot police fired tear gas and pepper spray on Monday to keep an angry large crowd from entering the remains of Brazil&#8217;s National Museum after it burned down.
