{"id":13703,"date":"2018-09-03T09:23:54","date_gmt":"2018-09-03T09:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=13703"},"modified":"2018-09-03T09:23:54","modified_gmt":"2018-09-03T09:23:54","slug":"iran-fm-to-meet-with-assad-as-syria-showdown-looms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=13703","title":{"rendered":"Iran FM to meet with Assad as Syria showdown looms"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1365976\/middle-east\" readability=\"52\">\n<p>\nADEN: Yemen\u2019s embattled government has agreed to raise the salaries of thousands of public-sector employees, including pensioners, after hundreds of people protested in Aden against the rising cost of living.<br \/>For more than a year, the government has been unable to pay salaries in the impoverished and war-torn country, as the local currency plummets against the dollar.<br \/>Late Sunday a cabinet meeting in Riyadh chaired by President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, who has lived in exile since 2015, approved \u201can increase in civil sector salaries, including retirees and contractors,\u201d Yemen\u2019s state-run Saba news agency reported.<br \/>It was not immediately clear when the raise would take effect.<br \/>The decision came hours after hundreds of people took to the streets of Aden, the southern province that now serves as the government\u2019s de facto capital, burning tires and blocking main roads to demand government aid.<br \/>Protest organizers have called for further civil disobedience until the government instates measures to aid millions of Yemenis struggling to survive.<br \/>The riyal has lost more than two-thirds of its value against the dollar since 2015, when Saudi Arabia and its allies joined the government\u2019s fight against Yemen\u2019s Houthi rebels.<br \/>The economic downturn, along with a blockade on the rebel-held international airport and ports, has left Yemenis unable to afford food staples and bottled water.<br \/>In January, Saudi Arabia \u2014 Hadi\u2019s main ally \u2014 announced a $2 billion bailout to help bolster the central bank.
