But we<\/span>\u00a0<span>have no alternatives,&#8221; he adds. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span>&#8220;The cultivation of legal crops like cocoa doesn&#8217;t bring any income and I have a family and need to provide for them. The coca makes it possible for me to send my children to school.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The country saw a 52 percent increase in production 2016, according to <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unodc.org\/unodc\/en\/frontpage\/2017\/July\/new-unodc-report_-coca-crops-in-colombia-increase-over-50-per-cent-in-one-year.html\" target=\"_blank\">UN figures<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">That same year, the Colombian government signed a landmark agreement that ended more than 50 years of conflict with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/americas\/2008\/07\/20087304414709586.html\">FARC<\/a>) rebel group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As part of the peace agreement, a\u00a0new voluntary eradication and crop substitution programme began, but its implementation has been difficult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The coca farmers say that there are no alternatives to the\u00a0illegal cultivation and due to the high level of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/corruption.html\">corruption<\/a>, the promised financial support to help substitute their crops are only words that are never put into action.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Until 2016, FARC controlled 70 percent of the coca crops, most of it in the south of Colombia. Since the agreement, other groups have taken over the business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Meanwhile, cocaine consumption in the US is rising, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/docs\/DIR-040-17_2017-NDTA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">US Drug Enforcement Administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As the US is financing a big part of the\u00a0anti-drug war, which includes forced eradication, it is putting pressure on the Colombian government, blaming them for not meeting its anti-narcotic requirements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In October 2017, farmers protested against the forced eradication of their coca fields in Narino, when the local security forces opened fire against them and killed 12 civilians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;The government has come many times, saying they would offer us support within a substitution programme. But these are only words.
