{"id":13449,"date":"2018-09-01T01:29:07","date_gmt":"2018-09-01T01:29:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=13449"},"modified":"2018-09-01T01:29:07","modified_gmt":"2018-09-01T01:29:07","slug":"nicaragua-orders-expulsion-of-un-team-after-critical-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=13449","title":{"rendered":"Nicaragua orders expulsion of UN team after critical report"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"109.045598194\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The government of Nicaragua&#8217;s embattled President Daniel Ortega has ordered the expulsion of a United Nations human rights team, rights groups have said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The move on Friday came two days after the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Office of the <span>UN\u00a0<\/span>High Commissioner for Human Rights\u00a0<\/span>published a critical report blaming the government for the violent repression of opposition protests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The UN report\u00a0described repression that stretched from the streets to courtrooms, where some protesters face terrorism charges.<\/p>\n<p>It demanded urgent action and criticised authorities over their heavy-handed response to anti-government protests during months of turmoil that have left hundreds of people dead, according to rights groups.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Nicaraguan government has expelled the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in retaliation for their damning report on the bloodbath in Nicaragua,&#8221; Jose Miguel Vivanco, the executive director for the Americas division at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/human-rights-watch.html\">Human Rights Watch<\/a>, tweeted in English and Spanish on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><span>In a press conference on Friday,\u00a0<\/span>Vilma Nunez, president of Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (CENIDH), said the expulsion reflected\u00a0&#8220;the spirit of someone who feels completely lost and can no longer hide his responsibilities and hide from the truth&#8221;, in a clear reference to Ortega.<\/p>\n<p>Nicaragua&#8217;s turmoil was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/04\/nicaragua-launches-deadly-crackdown-anti-government-protests-180421113938580.html\">triggered on April 18<\/a> when relatively small protests against now-scrapped social security reforms were met with a government crackdown, backed by armed paramilitaries.<\/p>\n<p>The UN denounced a wide range of serious violations, including disproportionate use of force by police, which in some cases resulted in extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention and torture.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The violence and impunity of these past four months have exposed the fragility of the country&#8217;s institutions and the rule of law,&#8221; UN rights chief Zeid Ra&#8217;ad Al Hussein warned in a statement, describing a &#8220;climate of fear and mistrust.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ortega refuted the claims and described the UN as &#8220;an instrument of the policies of terror, lies and infamy.&#8221; He has rejected calls to hold early elections and resign.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The UN Security Council is expected to discuss the situation in Nicaragua in early September<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government of Nicaragua&#8217;s embattled President Daniel Ortega has ordered the expulsion of a United Nations human rights team, rights groups have said.
