{"id":13002,"date":"2018-08-28T09:24:49","date_gmt":"2018-08-28T09:24:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=13002"},"modified":"2018-08-28T09:24:49","modified_gmt":"2018-08-28T09:24:49","slug":"colombia-to-withdraw-from-pan-south-american-unasur-bloc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=13002","title":{"rendered":"Colombia to withdraw from pan-South American UNASUR bloc"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"117.455162385\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/colombia.html\">Colombian<\/a> President<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/06\/ivan-duque-colombia-president-elect-180617161231411.html\"> Ivan Duque<\/a> has announced his country&#8217;s withdrawal from the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), a bloc set up a decade ago to counter US influence in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Duque said the group acted as an accomplice to the &#8220;Venezuelan dictatorship&#8221; and said the move<span>\u00a0will be completed in six months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">His announcement follows a decision by Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/paraguay.html\">Paraguay<\/a>, in April to temporarily suspend their membership of the organisation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 12-member bloc was created in 2008 to promote regional integration.<\/p>\n<p>The late Venezuelan leader Hugo\u00a0<span>Chavez and other South American leaders opposed US-backed proposals for a Free Trade Area of the Americas, and instead set up UNASUR to help move their countries\u00a0<\/span>towards an economic and political union.<\/p>\n<p>Before Colombia renounced its membership, Bolivia urged Duque to reconsider his position.<\/p>\n<p><span>The remaining members are Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Uruguay, Guyana and Suriname.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Venezuela&#8217;s crisis\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>According to the UN, 1.6 million Venezuelans have fled the country since 2015, with 90 percent going to countries within South America.<\/p>\n<p><span>Colombia has granted 800,000 of them temporary residence, but many want to travel onwards to Peru, Chile, or even Argentina, which has\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/180501190847389.html\">taken in more than 30,000 Venezuelans<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Duque has said all diplomatic approaches should be used to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>&#8220;isolate the regime&#8221; in Venezuela.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The most important thing at this moment is that if the dictatorship does not end, the migration will not stop,&#8221; he told the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) News\u00a0in an interview last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Governments initially welcomed the migrants with open arms, due to Venezuela&#8217;s role in welcoming those fleeing dictatorships and conflicts in the past.<\/p>\n<p>But the exodus has ballooned this year, stretching social services, creating more competition for low-skilled jobs, and stoking fears of unrest.<\/p>\n<p>In the past two weeks, both Ecuador and Peru<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/home-chance-thousands-reach-peru-rules-180825171602319.html\"> announced tighter entry rules<\/a> for Venezuelans, requiring Venezuelans to carry valid passports instead of just national ID cards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE: <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colombian President Ivan Duque has announced his country&#8217;s withdrawal from the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), a bloc set up a decade ago to counter US influence in the region.
