{"id":12828,"date":"2018-08-26T17:22:50","date_gmt":"2018-08-26T17:22:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12828"},"modified":"2018-08-26T17:22:50","modified_gmt":"2018-08-26T17:22:50","slug":"refugees-allowed-to-leave-ship-as-prosecutor-investigates-salvini","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12828","title":{"rendered":"Refugees allowed to leave ship as prosecutor investigates Salvini"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"135.079575597\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Italy&#8217;s Deputy Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/matteo-salvini-italy-radical-interior-minister-180624183439451.html\">Matteo Salvini<\/a> is under investigation by a Sicilian prosecutor for refusing to allow more than 150 migrants and refugees to enter Italy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Salvini, who is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/italy.html\">Italy<\/a>&#8216;s interior minister, is being investigated for abuse of office, kidnapping and illegal arrest, after forcing refugees to stay on a ship at the Sicilian port of Catania for almost a week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Salvini blocked them from disembarking the Diciotti in the absence of an agreement from other European member states to share the responsibility of relocation.<\/p>\n<p>Following the news of the investigation, Italian authorities allowed people to get off the ship, hours after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/ill-refugees-stranded-italy-ship-health-worries-grow-180825160603198.html\">Saturday&#8217;s decision<\/a> to let 16 people off who were unwell.<\/p>\n<p>Salvini, leader of the far-right anti-migration League party, responded to the investigation into his conduct on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/salviniofficial\/posts\/10156016072708155\" target=\"_blank\">his Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The prosecutor of Agrigento wants my information? Don&#8217;t waste your time, I&#8217;ll give it to you. Matteo Salvini, born in Milan on 9\/3\/1973, resident in Milan with Italian citizenship,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m proud to be questioned and arrested if for defending and securing the borders of our country.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Health issues<\/h2>\n<p>The Diciotti vessel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/odyssey-refugees-stuck-italy-ship-eu-talks-fail-180824193619170.html\">docked<\/a> at the Sicilian port of Catania on Monday night after rescuing 190 people from dinghies in distress off the Maltese coast in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven women and five men &#8211; two of whom are suspected to have tuberculosis &#8211; were given permission by Italian authorities to get off on Saturday, following an onboard visit by doctors requested by the health ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 190 people originally on board the Diciotti, 27 unaccompanied children and 13 others had previously been allowed to disembark.<\/p>\n<h2>Stand-offs with EU<\/h2>\n<p><span>The Diciotti is the latest in a string of cases which saw\u00a0<\/span>Italy<span>, as well as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/malta.html\">Malta<\/a><span>, refuse or delay the disembarkation of people rescued in the central Mediterranean, often after spending many months in detention in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/libya.html\">Libya<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Under European Union (EU) law, migrants must seek asylum in the country they arrive, leading to regular spats between Italy and its EU partners.<\/p>\n<p>In June, Salvini refused docking rights to the Aquarius, a rescue ship with 629 refugees and migrants on board, forcing it to travel to Spain.<\/p>\n<p>The following month, several European countries promised to relocate 270 out of more than 400 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/07\/italy-salvini-vows-migrant-arrivals-boat-180705175842038.html\">migrants<\/a>\u00a0and refugees that had arrived in the Sicilian port of Pozzallo.<\/p>\n<p>Arrivals to Italy &#8211; and to Europe overall &#8211; have more than halved in 2017 to just over 172,300.<\/p>\n<p>More than 3,000 people died or went missing in the same year.<\/p>\n<p>Salvini&#8217;s League party was one of the winners of the March elections.
