{"id":12768,"date":"2018-08-26T01:24:04","date_gmt":"2018-08-26T01:24:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12768"},"modified":"2018-08-26T01:24:04","modified_gmt":"2018-08-26T01:24:04","slug":"one-dead-in-nepal-rally-demanding-action-over-teens-rape-murder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12768","title":{"rendered":"One dead in Nepal rally demanding action over teen&#8217;s rape, murder"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"110.771701721\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">One teenage boy has been killed and dozens were injured in west\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/nepal.html\">Nepal<\/a> when police opened fire on protesters demanding action over the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl, according to officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Angry crowds took to the streets in the city of Mahendranagar on Friday, accusing police of protecting the person responsible for the brutal crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Police officer Krishna Raj Ojha told AFP news agency on Saturday that 17-year-old Sani Khuna was killed after officers fired shots &#8220;to contain the violent protest&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><!-- PAGELOADEDSUCCESSFULLY-->According to the Kathmandu Post, Khuna died while being taken to hospital for treatment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The publication said that several other protesters, as well as police personnel, were injured in the clashes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Police said an indefinite curfew has been imposed in the area, near the border with India&#8217;s Uttarakhand state. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Schoolgirl Nirmala Panta went missing in late July and her body was found the following day in a sugar-cane field.<\/p>\n<p>Anger boiled over after police arrested a man who reportedly has severe learning difficulties, and whom protesters say is a scapegoat allowing officers to shield the real culprit.<\/p>\n<p>The victim&#8217;s family have also accused police of failing to take action over her death.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The state has not taken the cases of rape and violence against women seriously,&#8221; women&#8217;s rights activist Hima Bista told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Protection is being provided to the rape-accused time and again,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>Further rallies are planned for Saturday across Nepal.
