{"id":12714,"date":"2018-08-25T14:23:15","date_gmt":"2018-08-25T14:23:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12714"},"modified":"2018-08-25T14:23:15","modified_gmt":"2018-08-25T14:23:15","slug":"egypt-eight-killed-in-military-operation-in-north-sinai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12714","title":{"rendered":"Egypt: Eight killed in military operation in north Sinai"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"89.3391178597\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Four armed men have been killed in an operation by the Egyptian police in the city of Arish in northern Sinai.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Egyptian security source told Arabic-language media that four Egyptian policemen were also killed in the clashes on Saturday, while several others were wounded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">According to the source, the attackers were wearing explosives and others carried light weapons.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining members of the group managed to flee the site of the operation, said the unnamed source.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have not blamed any specific group and none has claimed responsibility, although fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant are active in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/egypt.html\">Egypt<\/a>&#8216;s military said it has killed 52 fighters in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/sinai-peninsula.html\">Sinai Peninsula<\/a>\u00a0over the past few days as part of its ongoing efforts to eliminate armed groups in the sparsely populated desert region.<\/p>\n<p>More than 300 fighters have been killed in Sinai since the Egyptian army launched an operation to defeat armed groups in Sinai in February.<\/p>\n<p>Defeating armed groups and restoring security has been a promise of President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/middleeast\/2013\/07\/201373112752442652.html\">Abdel Fattah el-Sisi<\/a>, who was re-elected in March in a landslide victory against no real opposition.<\/p>\n<p>Sisi&#8217;s critics say his presidency has brought about a harsh crackdown on dissent, but supporters say such measures, which include mass imprisonment of political opposition, are needed to stabilise Egypt.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four armed men have been killed in an operation by the Egyptian police in the city of Arish in northern Sinai.
