But it wasn't shot with one\" border=\"0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"speakable\">Chinese tech company Huawei says the Australian government has blocked it from providing 5G technology for the country&#8217;s wireless networks.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"speakable\"> Huawei, one of the world&#8217;s biggest makers of smartphones and telecommunications equipment, said Thursday that the government had informed it of the decision. <\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"> &#8220;This is an extremely disappointing result for consumers,&#8221; the Chinese company <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HuaweiOZ\/status\/1032411216184930304\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> on Twitter. &#8220;Huawei is a world leader in 5G.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p> The announcement follows reports in recent months that Australian national security agencies <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/06\/18\/technology\/huawei-australia-5g-china\/index.html\">were concerned<\/a> about alleged ties between Huawei and the Chinese government. <\/p>\n<p> The Australian government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minister.communications.gov.au\/minister\/mitch-fifield\/news\/government-provides-5g-security-guidance-australian-carriers\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a> Thursday that the involvement of telecom equipment suppliers &#8220;who are likely to be subject to extrajudicial directions from a foreign government that conflict with Australian law&#8221; could mean the country&#8217;s wireless carriers are unable &#8220;to adequately protect a 5G network from unauthorized access or interference.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p> The Australian government&#8217;s statement didn&#8217;t mention China or Huawei by name. <\/p>\n<p> Huawei has repeatedly rejected the security concerns, insisting that it is a private company owned by employees with no other shareholders. <\/p>\n<p> But it has faced scrutiny and restrictions in Australia and other countries previously. In 2012, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/06\/18\/technology\/huawei-australia-5g-china\/index.html\">blocked<\/a> from the bidding for a huge Australian national broadband network. <\/p>\n<div class=\"cnnplayer\" id=\"cnnplayer1\">\n<div class=\"cnnVidplayer\">\n<div class=\"summaryImg\" id=\"vid1\" href=\"http:\/\/rss.cnn.com\/video\/technology\/2016\/05\/20\/inside-chinas-silicon-valley.cnnmoney\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.cdn.turner.com\/money\/dam\/assets\/160520025040-inside-chinas-silicon-valley-00002913-1024x576.jpg\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" alt=\"See what a Chinese tech giant's campus is like\" border=\"0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p> Huawei said Thursday that the Australian government also banned fellow Chinese tech firm <span>ZTE<\/span> <span>(<span class=\"inlink_chart\"><a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=ZTCOF&#038;source=story_quote_link\" class=\"inlink\">ZTCOF<\/a><\/span>)<\/span> from providing 5G technology for the country&#8217;s wireless networks. <\/p>\n<p> ZTE did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company is still struggling to repair the damage inflicted by a <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/07\/13\/technology\/zte-ban-lifted\/index.html\">crippling US government ban that prevented it from doing business with American companies for months<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p> ZTE&#8217;s controlling shareholder is Shenzhen Zhongxingxin Telecommunications Equipment, a Chinese state-owned corporation. ZTE has in the past denied that its products pose a security risk. <\/p>\n<p> The Chinese government is &#8220;gravely concerned&#8221; by Australia&#8217;s decision, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said Thursday. <\/p>\n<p> &#8220;The Australian government should not use various excuses to artificially set barriers,&#8221; Lu said at a regular news briefing. &#8220;We urge the Australian government to abandon ideological prejudices and provide a fair competitive environment for Chinese enterprises operating in Australia.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p> Australia&#8217;s ban comes amid increased scrutiny in other countries including <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/06\/28\/technology\/huawei-chairman-congress-rubio-banks\/index.html\">the United States<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/07\/19\/technology\/huawei-security-uk\/index.html\">the United Kingdom<\/a>, where officials have warned of potential national security risks from using Huawei or ZTE products. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"body_img body_img--780\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.cdn.turner.com\/money\/dam\/assets\/180803165516-huawei-phones-780x439.jpg\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" alt=\"huawei phones\" border=\"0\"><figcaption class=\"caption\">Huawei is one of the world&#8217;s biggest makers of smartphones and equipment for telecommunications networks.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p> Huawei tweeted Thursday that it &#8220;has safely &#038; securely delivered wireless technology&#8221; in Australia for close to 15 years. <\/p>\n<p> <span>Vodafone<\/span> <span>(<span class=\"inlink_chart\"><a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=VOD&#038;source=story_quote_link\" class=\"inlink\">VOD<\/a><\/span>)<\/span> and Optus, two of Australia&#8217;s biggest mobile phone carriers, have supplier relationships with Huawei and had previously tested the company&#8217;s 5G equipment. <\/p>\n<p> Vodafone&#8217;s chief strategy officer in Australia, Dan Lloyd, criticized the government&#8217;s announcement, saying it &#8220;creates uncertainty for carriers&#8217; investment plans.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p> &#8220;This decision is a significant change which fundamentally undermines Australia&#8217;s 5G future, and we will consider what it means for our business,&#8221; he added. <\/p>\n<p> Spokespersons for Optus and <span>Telstra<\/span> <span>(<span class=\"inlink_chart\"><a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=TLSYY&#038;source=story_quote_link\" class=\"inlink\">TLSYY<\/a><\/span>)<\/span>, another major Australian carrier, said in separate statements that the companies &#8220;will comply&#8221; with the government&#8217;s decision. <\/p>\n<p> <i>&#8212; Angus Watson and Yong Xiong contributed to this report.<\/i> <\/p>\n<p> <span class=\"cnnStorySource\"> CNNMoney (Hong Kong) <\/span> <span class=\"cnnDateStamp\">First published August 22, 2018: 9:22 PM ET<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chinese tech company Huawei says the Australian government has blocked it from providing 5G technology for the country&#8217;s wireless networks.
