{"id":12402,"date":"2018-08-22T15:24:57","date_gmt":"2018-08-22T15:24:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12402"},"modified":"2018-08-22T15:24:57","modified_gmt":"2018-08-22T15:24:57","slug":"saudi-arabia-seeks-death-penalty-for-female-activist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12402","title":{"rendered":"Saudi Arabia &#8216;seeks death penalty&#8217; for female activist"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"134.269850746\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>&#8216;s public prosecutor\u00a0is seeking the death penalty for five human rights activists who are currently being tried by the country&#8217;s terrorism tribunal, according to rights groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Among the detainees is Israa al-Ghomgham, who Saudi activists say is\u00a0<span>the first woman to face capital punishment for human rights-related work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Human Rights Watch (<\/span>HRW<span>)\u00a0<\/span>said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2018\/08\/21\/saudi-prosecution-seeks-death-penalty-female-activist\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> on Tuesday the charges against the activists &#8220;do not resemble recogniseable crimes&#8221; and include &#8220;incitement to protest&#8221;, &#8220;chanting slogans hostile to the regime&#8221; and &#8220;providing moral support to rioters&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have held the five activists, along with another not facing the death penalty, in pretrial detention without legal representation for more than two years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They are due to appear in court again on October 28, according to HRW.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any execution is appalling, but seeking the death penalty for activists like Israa al-Ghomgham, who are not even accused of violent behaviour, is monstrous,&#8221; said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at HRW.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ALQST, a UK-based group advocating for human rights in Saudi Arabia, previously reported the public prosecutor&#8217;s decision on Twitter on Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The rights group also denied social media reports that the detainees had already been executed, saying the case was &#8220;still under review.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"5.94078947368\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">URGENT NEWS:<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Saudi_Arabia?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Saudi_Arabia<\/a>&#8216;s Public Prosecutor is calling for the death penalty for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Israa_al_Ghamgham?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Israa_al_Ghamgham<\/a> for her involvement in peaceful rights activism. ALQST (@ALQST_ORG) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ALQST_ORG\/status\/1031192642493841410?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 19, 2018<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span>A prominent activist, al-Ghomgham documented mass demonstrations in the kingdom&#8217;s Eastern Province from 2011, before being arrested along with her husband in 2015.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ghomgham and the other activists are being tried by Saudi Arabia&#8217;s Specialized Criminal Court (SCC), which was set up in 2008 to try terrorism cases and has\u00a0<\/span>since been used to prosecute peaceful dissidents, according to HRW.<\/p>\n<h2>Social reform<\/h2>\n<p>A deeply conservative absolute monarchy where public protests and political parties are banned, Saudi Arabia has enacted some high-profile social and economic reforms since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/06\/profile-saudi-crown-prince-mohammed-bin-salman-170621130040539.html\">Mohammed bin Salman<\/a>\u00a0became crown prince in June 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Bin Salman has courted Western partners to support his economic reform plan, offering billions of dollars of arms sales and promising to modernise the kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2017, King Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/09\/saudi-arabia-women-drive-170926190857109.html\">signed a royal degree<\/a> lifting the ban on women driving and greater participation in the public sphere was opened up to women.<\/p>\n<p>This has coincided with ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/saudi-arabia-arrests-women-rights-activists-180801143608133.html\">arrests<\/a> of prominent Saudi women&#8217;s rights activists who had publicly advocated for gender equality, the right for women to drive and an end to the country&#8217;s male guardianship system, which threaten Bin Salman&#8217;s image as a reformer.<\/p>\n<p>At least 13 women have been arrested since May.
