{"id":12378,"date":"2018-08-22T11:26:12","date_gmt":"2018-08-22T11:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12378"},"modified":"2018-08-22T11:26:12","modified_gmt":"2018-08-22T11:26:12","slug":"hawaii-braces-for-category-5-hurricane-lane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12378","title":{"rendered":"Hawaii braces for Category 5 Hurricane Lane"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"97.3091106291\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Hurricane warnings and watches have been issued across Hawaii after the National Weather Service&#8217;s (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prh.noaa.gov\/hnl\/\" target=\"_blank\">NWS<\/a>) Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu advised that Hurricane Lane has now strengthened to a category five storm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">It is currently located around 600km south-southeast of Hilo and is packing winds of up to 260 kilometres per hour\u00a0with gusts nearer 315km\/h. It will weaken over the next few days but it will still be capable of causing catastrophic damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Lane is forecast to move dangerously close to the main Hawaiian Islands later this week, potentially bringing damaging winds and life-threatening flash flooding from heavy rainfall anywhere in the state.<\/p>\n<p>As Lane is expected to be slow-moving as it nears the islands, it will produce large and damaging surf.<\/p>\n<p>Lane is only the second category-five hurricane on record to pass within 560km of Hawaii, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NWSHonolulu\/status\/1032143364454539264\" target=\"_blank\">NWS<\/a>. The last was Hurricane John in 1994.<\/p>\n<p>As Lane moves up from the southeast, the earliest potential threat to land will be for the Big Island, where a Hurricane Warning is now in effect.<\/p>\n<p>Preparations there are now being rushed to completion as tropical storm-force winds are forecast to arrive in the warning area by late Wednesday or early Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>A Hurricane Watch remains in effect for Maui County, and is now posted for Oahu, with tropical storm-force winds possibly beginning Thursday or Thursday night. Any lava evacuees will now have to seek shelter or move to alternative locations.<\/p>\n<p>There is still a high degree of uncertainty on the forecast track and intensity of Lane.
