{"id":12300,"date":"2018-08-21T20:23:46","date_gmt":"2018-08-21T20:23:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12300"},"modified":"2018-08-21T20:23:46","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T20:23:46","slug":"russia-delivers-fighter-jets-to-serbia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12300","title":{"rendered":"Russia delivers fighter jets to Serbia"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"99.8581560284\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Serbia&#8217;s air force received two Russian MiG-29 fighter jets as part of an arms purchase that could heighten tensions in the Balkans and increase Moscow&#8217;s influence in the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic attended the ceremony on Tuesday at a military airport close to the Serbian capital, Belgrade, thanking Russian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/vladimir-putin.html\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> for helping make Serbia&#8217;s armed forces stronger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In October,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/serbia.html\"> Serbia<\/a> received six MiG-29s from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/russia.html\">Russia<\/a>, which has also promised the delivery of 30 battle tanks and 30 armoured vehicles. Serbia, a Russian ally, was at war with neighbours<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/croatia.html\"> Croatia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/bosnia.html\">Bosnia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/regions\/kosovo.html\">Kosovo<\/a> in the 1990s during the bloody break-up of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/yugoslavia.html\">former Yugoslavia.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>Moscow gave the secondhand jets to Serbia for free and the two that flew in on Tuesday underwent extensive overhauls. Repairs on the six other fighters will cost Serbia about $213m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Vucic, a former ultranationalist, said the repaired MiGs should be named after Serbian pilots and other &#8220;heroes&#8221; who died during the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/nato.html\">NATO<\/a> aggression&#8221; in 1999, when Serbia&#8217;s air force was depleted during the alliance&#8217;s 78-day air war against the Balkan state because of its bloody crackdown against Kosovo Albanian separatists.<\/p>\n<p>Vucic also said Serbia might reintroduce compulsory military service, nine years after abolishing it, to help improve the combat readiness of its army in the Balkans, where tensions occasionally flare.<\/p>\n<p><span>Serbia, which claims military neutrality, is negotiating additional arms purchases from Russia, including attack and transport helicopters and air defence systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Vucic said he expects the eight refurbished MiGs to fly at a military parade that Putin is expected to attend in Belgrade in November.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Serbia faces a mini arms race with NATO-member Croatia, which in March agreed to purchase 12 used F-16 fighter aircraft from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/israel.html\"> Israel<\/a> for $500m.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE: <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Serbia&#8217;s air force received two Russian MiG-29 fighter jets as part of an arms purchase that could heighten tensions in the Balkans and increase Moscow&#8217;s influence in the region.
