{"id":12172,"date":"2018-08-20T17:22:56","date_gmt":"2018-08-20T17:22:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12172"},"modified":"2018-08-20T17:22:56","modified_gmt":"2018-08-20T17:22:56","slug":"ugandan-police-clash-with-opposition-protesters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=12172","title":{"rendered":"Ugandan police clash with opposition protesters"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"137.32565191\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Ugandan police fired live rounds and tear gas in the capital to disperse a crowd of protesters angered over the arrests and alleged torture of several opposition politicians, including local pop star and government critic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/01\/bobi-wine-uganda-stuck-president-museveni-180103064822027.html\">Bobi Wine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Demonstrations continued for a second day in Kampala, as well as other parts the country on Monday, with protesters burning tyres and blocking roads, a day after one man was shot dead and five others were wounded in anti-government protests in the town of Mityana.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Unrest in the East African country began last week when five opposition lawmakers were arrested in northern Uganda during campaigning for a by-election and two allegedly were tortured, part of what demonstrators call a pattern of repression by President Yoweri Museveni&#8217;s government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The police and the military moved in, broke up the protests using live gunfire and tear gas,&#8221; said Al Jazeera&#8217;s Malcolm Webb, reporting from Kampala. &#8220;Some people have gunshot wounds and we can still hear shots of tear gas being fired at a short distance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Footage on local television on Monday showed demonstrators setting up bonfires and barricades on streets in Kampala and police and military personnel trying to remove the roadblocks.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators are seeking the release of those detained, including\u00a0<span>Robert Kyagulanyi, a popular musician-turned-opposition-MP, who goes by the stage name Bobi Wine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Treason charges<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Political tensions rose last week after Kyagulanyi&#8217;s driver was shot dead following largely peaceful election campaigning. At the time, the pop star <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HEBobiwine\/status\/1029049725176217600\">tweeted<\/a>\u00a0the government was trying to kill him.<\/p>\n<p>According to the president&#8217;s office, opposition supporters stoned Museveni&#8217;s convoy and security forces were reacting to protect the president when the shot was fired in the northwestern town of Arua.<\/p>\n<p><span>Five members of parliament and dozens of other people were detained shortly afterwards on suspicion of taking part in the alleged assault.\u00a0<\/span>Two of the MPs were beaten during their arrest, according to politicians and relatives who visited them.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday,\u00a0<span>Kyagulanyi<\/span> and three other parliamentarians\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/uganda-pop-star-turned-politician-charged-military-court-180816151929137.html\">were charged<\/a> with treason and\u00a0unlawful posession of weapons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are not going to rest until the government releases Bobi Wine and others,&#8221; a youth protesting in Kampala told dpa news agency on Monday, before fleeing advancing security forces.<\/p>\n<p>Kyagulanyi, who joined parliament last year and has appealed to the young voters, will make another military court appearance on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s very popular here in the capital and in other parts of the country, even in neighbouring Kenya,&#8221; noted Webb. &#8220;He can get young people on the streets quite effectively.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kyagulanyi has accused\u00a0<span>Museveni of being a &#8220;dictator&#8221; seeking to &#8220;satisfy his ego&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We seem to be stuck with a president who doesn&#8217;t believe anyone else can lead Uganda. Unfortunately, that has left us lagging behind for a very long time,&#8221; he told Al Jazeera <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/01\/bobi-wine-uganda-stuck-president-museveni-180103064822027.html\">in an interview<\/a> earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>In power since 1986, Museveni, 73, is accused of stifling dissent through intimidation, beatings, detentions and prosecutions on trumped-up charges.<\/p>\n<p>Critics say he is set to rule for life after parliament last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/09\/uganda-introduces-bill-remove-presidential-age-limit-170927172204813.html\">removed an age limit<\/a> from the constitution that would have barred him from seeking re-election in 2021.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE: <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ugandan police fired live rounds and tear gas in the capital to disperse a crowd of protesters angered over the arrests and alleged torture of several opposition politicians, including local pop star and government critic Bobi Wine.
