\nRIYADH: Saudi Arabia has contributed $100 million to help reconstruct areas of north-eastern Syria formerly held by Daesh.<\/p>\n

\nThe Kingdom said the contribution would go toward a campaign\u00a0by the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS to \u201cstabilize\u201d the former Daesh bastion and help ensure the militants cannot re-emerge as a threat.<\/p>\n

\nThe United States, which leads the coalition, expressed its\u00a0 thanks and appreciation to Riyadh.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cThis significant contribution is critical to stabilization and early recovery efforts,\u201d a State Department spokeswoman said. \u201cSaudi Arabia has been a leading partner in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS from the outset.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nThe funds are the biggest single financial\u00a0 contribution yet for reconstruction efforts in areas formerly controlled by the extremists.<\/p>\n

\nThe money would \u201csave lives, help facilitate the return of displaced Syrians, and help ensure that Daesh cannot reemerge to threaten Syria, its neighbors, or plan attacks against the international community,\u201d the Saudi Embassy in Washington said.<\/p>\n

\nThe contribution aims to support \u201cstabilization projects\u201d and \u201cwill play a critical role in the coalition\u2019s efforts to revitalize communities, such as Raqqa, that have been devastated by Daesh terrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nThe statement said the money showed Saudi Arabia\u2019s continued commitment to serve as a stabilizing force in the region.<\/p>\n

\nThe funds, part of a pledge made by Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir last month, will go towards projects to restore essential services in the areas of health, agriculture, electricity, water, education, and transportation.<\/p>\n

\nThe\u00a0United Nations\u00a0has said reconstruction in Syria would\u00a0cost\u00a0at least\u00a0$250 billion. The Daesh takeover of large areas of territory in Syria and Iraq in 2014 led to huge levels of destruction.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\nA conference on the reconstruction of Iraq held in Kuwait in February raised $30 billion in funding commitment. Saudi Arabia said at the event it would contribute $1.5 billion in financial and reconstruction support.\u00a0<\/p>\n
