{"id":11890,"date":"2018-08-17T22:29:11","date_gmt":"2018-08-17T22:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=11890"},"modified":"2018-08-17T22:29:11","modified_gmt":"2018-08-17T22:29:11","slug":"un-human-rights-committee-asks-brazil-to-let-lula-run-in-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=11890","title":{"rendered":"UN human rights committee asks Brazil to let Lula run in election"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"106.333499253\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The United Nations Human Rights Committee has called for\u00a0<span>imprisoned former president Luiz Inacio &#8220;Lula&#8221; da Silva to be allowed to run\u00a0<\/span>as a candidate in Brazil&#8217;s presidential election in October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The committee, which <span id=\"docs-internal-guid-4f01db2a-7fff-35c9-e521-15ddb595d471\"><span>oversees countries&#8217; compliance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0said on Friday that Lula cannot be disqualified from the poll because his legal appeals are still ongoing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In an emailed statement, the committee said they urged Brazil &#8220;not to prevent him from standing for election in the 2018 presidential elections, until his appeals before the courts have been completed in fair judicial proceedings&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s Workers Party nominated Lula as their candidate earlier this month, despite him currently serving a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/07\/brazil-appeals-court-orders-president-lula-release-180708162958434.html\">12-year prison sentence<\/a>\u00a0for corruption.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The former president is leading the polls by a wide margin. H<span>e and his supporters say the charges are politically motivated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Under Brazilian law, candidates with a conviction upheld cannot hold office for eight years.<\/p>\n<p>But a conviction does not bar them from campaigning.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Electoral Tribunal, which has until September 17 to rule on\u00a0<span>Lula&#8217;s candidacy,<\/span>\u00a0is expected to bar the 72-year-old from running, a decision his lawyers could then appeal to the Supreme Court.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Car Wash conviction<\/h2>\n<p>Voters go to the polls on October 7 to pick their next president, as well as vote for their local and national representatives and state governors.<\/p>\n<p>In no presidential candidate secures more than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff vote between the top two contenders will take place on October 28.<\/p>\n<p><span>Lula,\u00a0<span>who ruled Brazil for two terms (2003-2010),\u00a0<\/span>was convicted of corruption in a sprawling investigation that has been called\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2015\/08\/brazil-key-political-figures-face-corruption-charges-150821013638139.html\">Car Wash<\/a><span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He says the charges are part of a political witch-hunt to keep him from running for president.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He was imprisoned in April, after the country&#8217;s Supreme Federal Tribunal denied his request to stay out of prison until he has exhausted all appeals against his conviction. \u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE: <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations Human Rights Committee has called for\u00a0imprisoned former president Luiz Inacio &#8220;Lula&#8221; da Silva to be allowed to run\u00a0as a candidate in Brazil&#8217;s presidential election in October.
