{"id":11728,"date":"2018-08-16T15:25:22","date_gmt":"2018-08-16T15:25:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=11728"},"modified":"2018-08-16T15:25:22","modified_gmt":"2018-08-16T15:25:22","slug":"aretha-louise-franklin-dies-at-the-age-of-76","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=11728","title":{"rendered":"Aretha Louise Franklin dies at the age of 76"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"238.376553629\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">The &#8220;Queen of Soul&#8221;, Aretha Louise Franklin, has died at the age of 76, according to her representative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The cultural icon, known for her signature song &#8220;Respect&#8221; and others, including &#8220;Think&#8221; and &#8220;I Say a Little Prayer&#8221;, passed away on Thursday at 9:50am local time from advanced pancreatic cancer in Detroit, Michigan, publicist Gwendolyn Quinn told the Associated Press.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart,&#8221; Franklin&#8217;s family said in a statement, according to the Associated Press. &#8220;We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family,&#8221; the statement added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days, her publicist said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Franklin was the high school dropout whose voice graced Martin Luther King Jr&#8217;s memorial service, serenaded three presidents\u00a0and whose voice was deemed so precious that it was declared a natural resource in the US state of Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>She won 18 Grammys and had some 25 gold records in her decades-long career that started when she was just 14 years old.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Teenage debut<\/h2>\n<p>Franklin was born in the US city of Memphis, Tennessee, to gospel singer parents Clarence and Barbara on March 25, 1942. She was one of five siblings.<\/p>\n<p>Clarence, a reverend, was largely responsible for raising her after separating from Franklin&#8217;s mother in 1948 and relocating the family to the city of Detroit, Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>Four years later, her mother died of a heart attack on March 7, 1952, fewer than three weeks before Franklin&#8217;s tenth birthday.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/8\/15\/8726d53d13a84f0e895dc3f7c48dd715_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"2.5\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/8\/15\/8726d53d13a84f0e895dc3f7c48dd715_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"5\">\n<td class=\"caption\">\n<span>Franklin was born in the US city of Memphis, Tennessee, to gospel singer parents Clarence and Barbara<\/span>\u00a0[File: Adrian Sainz\/AP]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But tragedy would not derail her, and by 1954 Franklin had made her debut singing appearance aged 14 at her father&#8217;s place of worship, the\u00a0New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit.<\/p>\n<p>The performance would mark the beginning of a career which would go on to stretch across seven decades and see her gain both domestic and international acclaim, including becoming the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.<\/p>\n<p><span>Notable hits included &#8220;Respect&#8221;, &#8220;<\/span><span>(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman&#8221; and &#8220;I Say A Little Prayer&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Presidential acclaim<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The plaudits of her work weren&#8217;t only from within the music industry, however, and in 2005 Franklin was awarded\u00a0<span>the Presidential Medal of Freedom by then-US President George W Bush.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>She was connected to several holders of the US&#8217;s highest political office, having performed at an inauguration gala\u00a0for Jimmy Carter in 1977 and both Bill Clinton&#8217;s and Barack Obama&#8217;s first\u00a0<span>inaugurations in 1993 and 2009 respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>With Obama, in particular, Franklin shared a special bond. Prior to the concert, Franklin\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/09\/26\/arts\/music\/aretha-franklin-on-singing-for-pope-francis-and-her-next-album.html?rref=collection\/timestopic\/Franklin,%20Aretha\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> the New York Times she wouldn&#8217;t be fazed by performing for the head of the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;<span>I wouldn&#8217;t say anyone makes me nervous &#8211; just a tiny butterfly here and there,&#8221; she said.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span><span>A force of nature<\/span> <\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Her effect on others, however, could be quite the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>On occasions, she would resemble something akin to a force of nature to those who found themselves on the wrong side of musical royalty.<\/p>\n<p>In his controversial 2014 biography of Franklin, &#8220;Respect&#8221;, noted writer David Ritz alleged the Queen of Soul was\u00a0<span>notorious on the entertainment circuit for cancelling concerts at the last minute, showing up late for performances and belittling contemporaries in the industry, as well as starting feuds with members of her own family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Franklin denounced Ritz&#8217;s portrayal as false, suggesting the biographer had produced a &#8220;vindictive&#8221; book because the pair fell out during while working together on her official autobiography 15 years before.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/8\/15\/253c5734170442138e36c7142c0bc705_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/8\/15\/253c5734170442138e36c7142c0bc705_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Franklin&#8217;s talent resonated deeply with former US President Barack Obama [File: Larry Downing\/Reuters]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Amid the allegations and denials, however, the esteem in which the generations of artists who followed Franklin held her was without doubt.<\/p>\n<p>From Beyonce to Mary J. She was married and divorced twice but said little publicly\u00a0about either relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Forays into politics and other aspects of public life were also rare.
