The accelerator &#8212; which typically injects $120,000 into startups during their early stages for a 7% stake &#8212; has until now only invested in US businesses. It says the companies it has backed now have a total valuation of more than $100 billion. <\/p>\n<p> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/08\/02\/technology\/google-china-censorship\/index.html\">Related: Google might return to China. Here&#8217;s why that&#8217;s so controversial<\/a><\/strong> <\/p>\n<p> The timing of its China launch remains unclear. <\/p>\n<p> A spokeswoman said Lu will be joining Y Combinator&#8217;s next startup boot camp &#8220;while he makes plans for the best way to structure YC China.&#8221; Y Combinator will begin selecting startups in October to attend its three-month boot camp starting in January. <\/p>\n<p> Altman called Lu &#8220;one of the most impressive technologists I know,&#8221; adding that he has been trying to recruit him for years. Lu will be CEO of Y Combinator China, and will also take over as head of the California incubator&#8217;s nonprofit research lab. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"body_img body_img--780\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.cdn.turner.com\/money\/dam\/assets\/180815114504-qi-lu-baidu-780x439.jpg\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" alt=\"qi lu baidu\" border=\"0\"><figcaption class=\"caption\">Y Combinator has tapped former Baidu executive Qi Lu to launch its China program. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p> Lu was a Microsoft veteran before Baidu hired him as president and chief operating officer in early 2017. He was tasked with driving Baidu&#8217;s big artificial intelligence projects, including autonomous cars and digital assistants. <\/p>\n<p> Less than two years in, however, Lu suddenly left Baidu, saying in a <a href=\"http:\/\/ir.baidu.com\/phoenix.zhtml?c=188488&#038;p=irol-newsArticle&#038;ID=2349799\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> that he could no longer work full-time in China &#8220;due to personal and family reasons.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p> <strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"inStoryHeading\">China&#8217;s tech rise<\/h2>\n<p><\/strong> <\/p>\n<p> Once branded as a tech copy cat, China has in recent years improved its reputation for innovation, fostering leading companies in areas such as digital payments and dockless bike sharing. <\/p>\n<p> &#8220;We think that a significant percentage of the largest technology companies that are founded in the next decade \u2014 companies at the scale of <span>Google<\/span> <span>(<span class=\"inlink_chart\"><a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=GOOG&#038;source=story_quote_link\" class=\"inlink\">GOOG<\/a><\/span>)<\/span>, Microsoft, <span>Apple<\/span> <span>(<span class=\"inlink_chart\"><a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=AAPL&#038;source=story_quote_link\" class=\"inlink\">AAPL<\/a><\/span>)<\/span>, <span>Amazon<\/span> <span>(<span class=\"inlink_chart\"><a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=AMZN&#038;source=story_quote_link\" class=\"inlink\">AMZN<\/a><\/span>)<\/span>, and <span>Facebook<\/span> <span>(<span class=\"inlink_chart\"><a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/quote\/quote.html?symb=FB&#038;source=story_quote_link\" class=\"inlink\">FB<\/a><\/span>)<\/span> \u2014 will be based in the US and China,&#8221; Altman said. <\/p>\n<p> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/06\/15\/technology\/didi-australia-melbourne-uber\/index.html\">Related: Chinese ride-hailing firm Didi launches in Australia<\/a><\/strong> <\/p>\n<p> Y Combinator&#8217;s plans to expand into China come at a sensitive time. Beijing&#8217;s efforts to boost the country&#8217;s high-tech industries, including robotics and computer chips, are <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/05\/02\/technology\/china-tech-us-tariffs\/index.html\">a key element<\/a> of the trade war with the United States. <\/p>\n<p> Four of the world&#8217;s top 10 private tech companies &#8212; including <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/06\/15\/technology\/didi-australia-melbourne-uber\/index.html\">ride hailing firm Didi Chuxing<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/06\/25\/technology\/meituan-dianping-ipo-hong-kong\/index.html\">online services provider Meituan Dianping<\/a> &#8212; are Chinese, according to CB Insights. The rest are American. <\/p>\n<p> Earlier this year, China&#8217;s Ministry of Science and Technology released a report tallying the country&#8217;s so-called unicorns &#8212; startups worth at least $1 billion.
