{"id":11348,"date":"2018-08-13T09:27:06","date_gmt":"2018-08-13T09:27:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=11348"},"modified":"2018-08-13T09:27:06","modified_gmt":"2018-08-13T09:27:06","slug":"rival-korean-leaders-to-meet-in-pyongyang-in-september","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=11348","title":{"rendered":"Rival Korean leaders to meet in Pyongyang in September"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"100.379491674\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">North Korea&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/kim-jong.html\">Kim Jong-un<\/a> and South Korea&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/05\/moon-jae-south-korea-president-170509123525219.html\">Moon Jae-in<\/a>\u00a0will meet in Pyongyang in September following talks between the two sides at the demilitarised zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">North and South Korean officials held high-level negotiations at the border truce village of Panmunjom on Monday to discuss the summit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In a three-sentence joint statement, the rival neighbours didn&#8217;t mention an exact date for the meeting and provided no details on how to implement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/04\/koreas-sign-peace-deal-pursue-complete-denuclearisation-180427105506660.html\">past agreements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The push for what will be the leaders&#8217; third summit since April comes amid renewed concerns about a nuclear standoff between Washington and Pyongyang.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The September summit can be viewed as North Korea&#8217;s strategy to find a breakthrough in its stalled talks with the US,&#8221; said <span>analyst Go Myong-hyun from the\u00a0<\/span>Asan Institute of Policy Studies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For South Korea, President Moon wants to improve inter-Korean ties, but that&#8217;s hard without progress in US-North Korea talks,&#8221; he told AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Rocky relations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Moon&#8217;s trip to Pyongyang will be the first in more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>The first South Korean president to go to the North&#8217;s capital was Kim Dae-jung, who met the current leader&#8217;s father and predecessor Kim Jong-il in 2000 and later won the Nobel Peace Prize in part for his efforts at inter-Korean reconciliation.<\/p>\n<p>Pyongyang saw a second inter-Korean summit in 2007 when Roh Moo-hyun also met Kim Jong-il.<\/p>\n<p>But relations subsequently soured as the North accelerated its pursuit of nuclear weapons and the South elected conservative governments.<\/p>\n<p>Kim and Moon met for the first time in April and agreed on steps towards nuclear disarmament. They met again in May in advance of Kim&#8217;s summit with US President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/11\/profile-president-donald-trump-161109050153947.html\">Donald Trump<\/a> in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>At their meeting in April, Kim and Moon signed a Panmunjom Declaration that calls for a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War and included a pledge to denuclearise the peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>Pyongyang has urged Washington to reciprocate its goodwill gestures, which include suspending missile and nuclear tests and returning the remains of Americans who fought in the Korean War.<\/p>\n<p>Washington, which cancelled an annual joint military exercise with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/south-korea.html\">South Korea<\/a>, has refused to ease sanctions until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/north-korea.html\">North Korea<\/a>\u00a0finally and fully denuclearises.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>North Korea&#8217;s Kim Jong-un and South Korea&#8217;s Moon Jae-in\u00a0will meet in Pyongyang in September following talks between the two sides at the demilitarised zone.
