{"id":11300,"date":"2018-08-12T22:32:13","date_gmt":"2018-08-12T22:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=11300"},"modified":"2018-08-12T22:32:13","modified_gmt":"2018-08-12T22:32:13","slug":"unite-the-right-2018-far-right-antiracists-descend-on-dc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=11300","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Unite the Right 2018&#8217;: Far right, antiracists descend on DC"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"190.222996516\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><strong>Washington, DC &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>More than 1,000 anti-fascist and antiracist protesters have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/dc-braces-rally-counterprotests-180811090124327.html\">descended on the US capital<\/a>\u00a0to counter a far-right rally, one year after the first &#8220;Unite the Right&#8221; in Charlottesville, Virginia turned deadly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Several counterprotests are taking place on Sunday near the &#8220;Unite the Right 2&#8221; event in Washington, DC&#8217;s Lafayette Park, located just outside the White House. Around 30 white supremacists and other members of the far right are expected to arrive in the Park around 21:30GMT. The far-right protest is being organised by Jason Kessler, who put together the last year&#8217;s\u00a0protest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/08\/unite-white-supremacists-rally-virginia-170812142356688.html\">Charlottesville<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">At that demonstration, white supremacists and other members of the alt-right clashed with anti-racists. It ended after a far-right protester <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/08\/charlottesville-witnessing-monstrous-attack-170814093145904.html\">rammed his car<\/a> into a crowd of counterdemonstrators, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring more than a dozen others. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/08\/charlottesville-james-alex-fields-170813111202708.html\">James Alex Fields Jr<\/a>, the accused driver, has since been charged on several counts, including federal hate crimes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Constance Young, an organiser with the Shut It Down DC activist group, was injured in the Charlottesville attack. She said she finds it &#8220;absolutely heinous&#8221; that white supremacists are able to gather under the Unite the Right banner for a second year, especially after what happened last August.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;It&#8217;s scary,&#8221;\u00a0<span>she told Al Jazeera prior to Sunday&#8217;s rally. &#8220;<\/span>It makes me feel deeply disturbed that they will be right outside of the White House, but where they are in physical proximity to our president or to this administration isn&#8217;t really the biggest issue; It&#8217;s that they feel emboldened to convene again.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Young is part of a group organising the <a href=\"https:\/\/shutitdowndc.org\/rally.html\" target=\"_blank\">Still Here, Still Present rally<\/a>, which began 12pm local time (16:00 GMT) in Washington, DC&#8217;s Freedom Plaza. It hosted a number of speakers from a variety of different backgrounds. Many of the rally&#8217;s participants then marched to Layfaette Park to join hundreds of other counterprotesters who had gathered behind police barricades and fences.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At around 20:00 GMT, a group of about 30 white supremacists and other members of the far right were seen walking, with police escort, towards the Lafeytte Park.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Unite the Right&#8217;s official website had encouraged participants to bring American and Confederate flags to its event. It said &#8220;there is no expectation of privacy&#8221; and told participants not to talk to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/categories\/media.html\">media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/8\/12\/217e827c1b8e4724a057c607ca000eda_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1.5\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/8\/12\/217e827c1b8e4724a057c607ca000eda_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Protesters also gathered at the University of Virginia ahead of the one year anniversary of the 2017 Charlottesville Unite the Right protests [Lucas Jackson\/Reuters]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Amanda Duzak Trebach, who also survived the Charlottesville attack, told those at a pre-counterprotest organising meeting on Wednesday night that it&#8217;s &#8220;imperative to confront the far right in order to not only block their hateful political ideas from being disseminated, but also to offer a solidly developed anti-racist&#8221; strategy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Maurice Cook, a DC-based organiser and cofounder of the March for Racial Justice group, agreed, telling Al Jazeera that Sunday&#8217;s counterprotest &#8220;is an opportunity for us to come together, recruit and do the structural work that we are charged to do to dismantle the impact of white supremacy in our country&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Security services in the DC area were on high alert for Sunday&#8217;s event. On Twitter, the DC Metropolitan Police Department tweeted that it was &#8220;prepared to protect the rights of individuals to exercise their First Amendment freedoms and also ensure public safety&#8221;. It later warned participants that it is against the city&#8217;s laws to carry a firearm within 1,000 feet (305 metres) from any First Amendment activity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Alt-right fractured<\/h2>\n<p>Sunday&#8217;s protest comes as the alt-right &#8211; <span>a loosely knit\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-21f62461-7fff-3627-cc37-4f950179cf56\">coalition\u00a0<\/span><span>of white nationalist, white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups &#8211;<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/08\/charlottesville-campuses-cities-spurn-170815085350150.html\">faces fractures <\/a> and infighting. After last year&#8217;s deadly event, several far-right groups sought to distance themselves from the alt-right. A number of universities also cancelled speaking events for leading alt-right members, many far-right individuals were kicked off of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/social-media.html\">social media<\/a> platforms and cities pulled or reject permits for similar right-wing protests.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>This year&#8217;s Unite the Right had been permitted to allow up to 400 people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Richard Spencer, the leader of the alt-right,<span>\u00a0said he w<\/span>ill not attend Sunday&#8217;s rally, tweeting that the protest &#8220;does not make sense at this time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know exactly what will happen,&#8221; he added, &#8220;but it will not be good&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>US President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/11\/profile-president-donald-trump-161109050153947.html\">Donald Trump<\/a>, who was heavily criticised for his response to last year&#8217;s Unite the Right, came under fire again on Saturday after he condemned &#8220;all types of <span id=\"docs-internal-guid-03d56cd0-7fff-ba6f-578f-3da5febbb1ef\"><span>racism <\/span> <\/span> and acts of violence&#8221; without specifically mentioning neo-Nazis or white supremacists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Twitter, the Southern Poverty Law Center watchdog group called the comments &#8220;too little &#8230; too late&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"8.4046692607\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Too little: &#8220;There is blame on both sides.&#8221;
