{"id":11178,"date":"2018-08-11T18:27:01","date_gmt":"2018-08-11T18:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=11178"},"modified":"2018-08-11T18:27:01","modified_gmt":"2018-08-11T18:27:01","slug":"calls-grow-for-release-of-bangladeshi-photographer-shahidul-alam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=11178","title":{"rendered":"Calls grow for release of Bangladeshi photographer Shahidul Alam"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"131.259101942\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Calls are growing for the release of award-winning photographer and social activist Shahidul Alam who was detained by Bangladeshi police <span>for &#8220;provocative comments&#8221;\u00a0about student-led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/protests.html\">protests<\/a> in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Alam, 63, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/bangladesh-renowned-photographer-detained-media-comments-180806065359943.html\">picked up by officers <\/a>at his home\u00a0in Dhaka on Sunday, hours after his remarks about the days-long rallies were broadcast on Al Jazeera.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Mass\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/bangladesh-mass-student-protests-deadly-road-accident-180802174519088.html\">demonstrations<\/a>\u00a0over road safety broke out in late July after two teenagers were killed by a speeding bus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Five renowned intellectuals and authors <span>&#8211; Arundhati Roy, Eve Ensler, Naomi Klein, Noam Chomsky and Vijay Prashad &#8211;\u00a0<\/span>issued a statement urging the Bangladeshi government to &#8220;immediately release&#8221; Alam and drop all charges against him<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Documentation and criticism are elementary aspects of human life. For a state to deny a citizen the right to say what is happening and to be angered about what is happening is a denial of this basic right,&#8221; their statement said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"9.29310344828\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Free Shahidul Alam. We hope that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sheikhhasina?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@sheikhhasina<\/a> will pay attention to the worldwide condemnation of the arrest and detention of Bangladesh&#8217;s celebrated photographer and teacher. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HKEzPhkWCm\">pic.twitter.com\/HKEzPhkWCm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Vijay Prashad (@vijayprashad) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vijayprashad\/status\/1027918829647810561?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 10, 2018<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Road safety protests<\/h2>\n<p>In his interview with Al Jazeera, Alam had<span>\u00a0<\/span>criticised the Bangladeshi government for their handling of the student-led protests and said they were &#8220;clinging on [to power] by brute force&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On his way to court on Monday, he told reporters police had beaten him and had not given him access to a lawyer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Alam was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/08\/bangladesh-information-minister-speaks-al-jazeera-journalist-arrest-180808093735048.html\">sent to hospital<\/a> after his wife petitioned the court challenging the legality of her husband&#8217;s arrest and asking he be given medical treatment after allegedly being beaten.<\/p>\n<p>Police have denied the allegation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since his detention, civil society groups, activists and others have called for his release.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, 24 civil society groups including Transparency International Bangladesh, Reporters Without Borders and the Committee to Protect Journalists issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.article19.org\/resources\/bangladesh-joint-statement-calls-for-immediate-release-of-shahidul-alam-and-allegations-to-be-dropped\/\">statement\u00a0<\/a>condemning the &#8220;blatant violation&#8221; of Alam&#8217;s right to freedom of expression and calling for his &#8220;immediate and unconditional&#8221; release.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A change.org\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/free-shahidul-alam\">petition<\/a>\u00a0for the release of Alam launched by rights group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/amnesty-international.html\">Amnesty International<\/a> reached 5,000 supporters on Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Dhaka police deputy commissioner Nazmul Islam said 12 people had been arrested for &#8220;spreading rumours&#8221; on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/facebook.html\">Facebook<\/a> during the protests, which he said left about 1,000 people injured.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hopefully in the next couple of days we will arrest more people,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Islam said rumours spread online had led to the &#8220;destruction of 382 public vehicles, including eight police vehicles&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Rights groups have criticised Bangladesh&#8217;s internet laws.
