{"id":11112,"date":"2018-08-11T01:23:17","date_gmt":"2018-08-11T01:23:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=11112"},"modified":"2018-08-11T01:23:17","modified_gmt":"2018-08-11T01:23:17","slug":"romania-tens-of-thousands-attend-anti-government-rallies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=11112","title":{"rendered":"Romania: Tens of thousands attend anti-government rallies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"156.457259337\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Romanian police have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters in the capital, Bucharest, as tens of thousands took to the streets to call on<span>\u00a0country&#8217;s government to resign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Friday&#8217;s rally was attended by many expatriates who returned to Romania to express their<span>\u00a0anger over<\/span>\u00a0what they say is entrenched high-level corruption, low wages and attempts by the\u00a0ruling Social Democrat (PSD) party to weaken the judiciary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Thousands of people also joined demonstrations in other main Romanian cities, including Cluj in the northwest, central Sibiu and Timisoara in the west.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In Bucharest, the crowd chanted &#8220;resign&#8221; and &#8220;thieves&#8221; as they assembled in a central square outside the main government building.<\/p>\n<p>Messages projected on buildings around the square said &#8220;We are the people&#8221; and &#8220;No violence&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\" readability=\"4.65753424658\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Romania?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Romania<\/a> | Massive protest in Bucharest against the Government. (@DragosIonita) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DragosIonita\/status\/1028009324067610625?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 10, 2018<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hundreds of the protesters tried to break through the police cordon and officers in riot gear responded with tear gas and pepper spray, forcing the demonstrators back.<\/p>\n<p>At least 100 people required medical attention after inhaling the gases, while 10 police officers were injured by hurled stones and bottles, the emergency services said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Corruption has been a big problem in Romania for a long time,&#8221; <span>Kit Gillet, a journalist who attended the protest in Bucharest, told Al Jazeera.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People are angry about that and feel that the system needs to change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span>Romania ranks as one of the EU&#8217;s most corrupt states and Brussels keeps its justice system under special monitoring.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Nothing has changed&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Stefan and Ileana Anghel, Romanian nationals living in Spain, waved a Spanish flag after travelling across Europe to take part in the demonstration.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately nothing has changed in Romania,&#8221; Ileana told AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to see modern roads and schools and above all to not have to pay bribes to the left and right,&#8221; added Ileana.<\/p>\n<p>Last month Romanian President Klaus Iohannis sacked top anti-graft prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi, who was considered a symbol of the fight against corruption.<\/p>\n<p>With Kovesi at the helm, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor&#8217;s Office (DNA) had led a crackdown on corruption among local and national elected officials in recent years, earning accusations of abuse of power and the enmity of many in Romania&#8217;s political class.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/8\/10\/cda6fbcbf0424467855591af38b192bf_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2018\/8\/10\/cda6fbcbf0424467855591af38b192bf_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"2\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Thousands joined an anti-government rally in Bucharest [Inquam Photos\/Octav Ganea via Reuters]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2><span>&#8216;I left to give my children a better life&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Among the protesters in Bucharest on Friday was 60-year-old Vlad and his wife who flew in from New York where they have lived for 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Corruption and embezzlement, which profit the ruling class, are what bothers me,&#8221; said Vlad, an estate agent in the US.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A force is being born here [at the protest] and I hope that the message is heard,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Around four million Romanians work abroad from an overall population of 20 million. Half of the expatriates are living in Italy and Spain, according to official figures. <\/p>\n<p>Last year those working abroad sent 4.3bn euro ($4.9) back to their families at home, nearly 2.5 percent of the national GDP in one of Europe&#8217;s poorest countries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I left to give my children a better life, which was not possible here then,&#8221; said lorry driver Daniel Ostafi, 42, who moved to Italy 15 years ago in search of a future he says Romania could not offer his family.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, it is still not possible, the &#8230; people who govern us are not qualified and they are corrupt,&#8221; he told Reuters news agency.<\/p>\n<p>Some politicians from the ruling coalition derided the rally in the run up, saying they did not understand why the diaspora would protest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE: <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Romanian police have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters in the capital, Bucharest, as tens of thousands took to the streets to call on\u00a0country&#8217;s government to resign.
