Evidence has emerged over suspects\u00a0in\u00a0some of the killings that occurred from Friday to Monday evening\u00a0inManaus, a river port\u00a0in\u00a0the middle of the Amazon rainforest, said Sergio Fontes, secretary of public safety\u00a0inAmazonas state, the capital of which is Manaus.<\/p>\n
Of all the killings, 35 were by gunfire. From Friday to Saturday alone 23 people died, Fontes said.<\/p>\n
He said there were signs the killings were coordinated, although no hypothesis is being ruled out.<\/p>\n
Fontes told the news website G1 that the killings could stem from revenge for the death Friday of a military policeman or from fighting among gangs operating both\u00a0inside and outside prisons.<\/p>\n
The firearms used\u00a0in\u00a0the killings are used exclusively by the police.<\/p>\n
“It is an\u00a0indication. I am not ruling out that line of\u00a0investigation … but I do not want to reach any conclusion until we complete the\u00a0investigation,” Fontes said over the weekend.<\/p>\n
Manaus is a violent\u00a0city, with a homicide rate of 37.4 per 100,000\u00a0inhabitants\u00a0in\u00a0the period 2010-2012, according to a study the government carried out along with UNESCO.
